Who HATES Public School Counselours?

When I asked my counselor for a recommendation and help getting transcripts for this early college entrance program, she asked my why I was trying to grow up too fast.

And I didn't get those transcripts until the week of the deadline. Which drove me nuts!

i hated my old school's counselor and mine right now is new so she has to 'check' with other people

We have four for 2000 people.

But I like mine... always goes that extra mile to help us out... Come on seriously guys... imagine if you were responsible for the academic, personal, curriculum, and discipline problems of hundreds of kids.. not to mention other administrative duties..

lol counselors....

My counselor always used to tell me that the classes I picked would be overkill and that I would not be able to succeed... I've proved her wrong so many times that she basically lets me adjust my own schedule now, regardless of pre-requisites and such.... I haven't talked to her about self-studying APs though, that's next on my list

I'm glad they hired another counselor who I was under now. She's much nicer and though knew actually lets me try programs that my other counselor wouldn't. She made me feel so stupid for asking what were the CLEP tests, dual enrollment or AP. "You're only a sophmore, you don't need to know." And I was right out the door.
So glad that my new counselor actually listens.
3000+ kids, 1 counselor for IB, 5 counselors for the others.

My high school has 180 students and one counselor. I never have to wait to get into his office. I can usually just run him down in the hallway if I need him. He's been mostly helpful, though he doesn't really have any experience with elite admissions. He's good enough for me.

Our school is 4 counselors for 1200 kids.
I love my counselor, she tries to do what she can in her power to fix my schedule. Actually, all the counselors at my school are like that (so I've heard from friends).
Guess I'm lucky :P

Our counselors are pretty good.
I mean yeah, they only deal with seniors and schedule changes at the beginning of each semester..and don't really have time for soph/juniors. But I mean they get their job done. They write recs on time, send transcripts on time (...even though you have to ask WEEKS ahead of time..), send as many copies of them as you want them to (no limit on number of college apps you can do) and are fairly helpful with basic info, scholarships..etc

They know nowhere NEAR as much as the people on CC do about getting into top schools but I don't blame them..only a few people apply each year so they spend more time making sure all the other kids get into a state university than helping the really motivated/overachiever kid get into Harvard. So I don't mind learning about this whole process by myself..they have enough work to do as it is.

Of course if you're a junior wanting to get ahead on the college app process...it's useless trying to ask. They're busy with seniors about like Feb/March. So there's a couple of weeks to make an appointment but when April comes around, they're helping seniors with acceptances and whatnot and then May they're preparing for graduation.

I actually really like my guidance counselor. I have heard that she pays a lot more attention to smarter kids, but I guess that is good for me. She genuinely cares about her students and wrote a recommendation that I would consider phenomenal (she went to Princeton).

there are 3 or 4 counselors for 2500+ kids, and there's this one counselor for "high potential" I think it's kind of unfair to the rest of the student body because there are people that are smarter and have more potential they do.

But overall, all they do is just like change your schedule and help the seniors with their apps.

my counselor is pretty good. She let me take some classes that are "advanced" for 10th graders in my school. But I still need to get to know her, and I need to get her to know me. IDK how to do that

my private school has 110 kids 2 conselors.
terrible IMO. they actually discouraged some of my friends from applying ED since they said it was harder to get in. im glad i have CC otherwise i would listen to them (like my bro did) and not ED anywhere. also my counselor loved me tho and did everything to write me a sick rec and get me in b/c she thought i was jesus reincarnated (yes jesuit school).

also she told me to EA gtown and ED penn :| luckily i didnt listen to her, thought one of my friends EA gtown and ED cornell :( hope he doesnt get caught

my couselor called me down once during freshman year, I haven't found a reason to go back and see her.

My guidance counselor told me I should "enjoy life" and "stop worrying about grades." It was very amusing.

The ones in my school are retarded.

She has never heard of UIUC, she doesn't let people take more than 1 AP (I had to BEG to take 5), and she is so focused on the kids that get into fights that she doesn't realize that there actually are some smart kids in the school.

I went to her last week for a "check up" and she asked me where I was planning to go to college. I was explaining about how I'm not going to get into UIUC with a 3.0 GPA, and she was like "A 3.0 will get you into 95% of the schools in this country." Then she just stared.
Thank god I know the truth from this site..

A 3.0 gets you into an overwhelming majority of schools.. Just not the ones that CC'ers obsess over.

a 3.0 will get you in to a massive 0% of the top 2 schools.

my school has 600 students with 1 counselor lol

I feel like there was a similar thread to this a while ago.....anyway, I just feel like you have to show the counselor who's boss. In freshman year, my old counselor was so amazed that I doubled up in math that she let me take anything I wanted afterward. And now during my senior year we have a new counselor and at first she didn't like me.....but after my dual enrollment grades came through she sees what my potential is. One more month, and I say I'll have her wrapped around my finger.
