who is applying this year? thread for people applying and people with advice

I’m apllying this year and I’m so nervous!! I want some advices…plzz

Last year i applied to choate, st.paul, and hotchkiss and i got waitlisted at all of them (because my middle skool didn’t give recomendations) and my strategy was to write why i really wanted to go to boarding skool and what i think about myself on a piece of paper. Then i looked at the paper a week later and applied everything i thought sounded good into my application. Im pretty sure that helped since my grades aren’t straight As

Does anyone know off the top of their heads which schools offer ice hockey?

I know Choate does. I’m pretty sure the info is relatively easy to find but I’m applying to a LOT of schools and if anyone happens to be an expert on the subject, that would be convenient! (aka don’t look it up for the sake of answering my question.) THANKS.

Off the top of my head… Loomis, Middlesex, Exeter, Milton, St. Pauls, Groton, and Lawrenceville all have ice hockey, if I’m not mistaken. Oh, and Hotchkiss! I seem to remember Hotchkiss having a really big, uber pretty rink. Seriously, I didn’t think an ice rink could be pretty until I visited.

Andover definitely has ice hockey as well. While I wouldn’t call the rink pretty, it was really nice with two full size rinks. It also has free skate Sunday-Friday (and Saturday in the winter). I went a few times through the week and usually had the rink to myself.

Does it help my admission at all to have a brother who goes to the boarding school I want to go to, and another who went to an ivy league college? Btw I am applying for 2010-2011. When’s the best time to apply and have an interview?

I helps to have a brother or sister. You should start studying now and applying when applications come out. You also want to schedule interview sooner rather than later because spots fill fast.

Can we write essays yet? Does it give you an advantage to have it done before the interview? I heard a lot of people do it over winter break. But then again, a head start doesn’t hurt. But I don’t want to end up writing last years prompt. Is the prompt out yet?

In response to lemons.can.fly: Yes it doesn’t hurt to have a head start but if you don’t know the prompts how are you going to write it? On the other hand some schools such as Exeter (I know for a fact) haven’t changed their prompts for the past decade so I don’t think they’ll change it now.

Haha okay thanks - I’ll take a look at Exeter’s now. Are there any other schools with the same prompts? And when do other schools change their prompts?

Try: The Hill School

I’m applying this year!
Just sent out inquiry forms to:
Exeter, Andover, Lawrenceville, Choate, Middlesex, Hotchkiss, Groton, Deerfield, and Concord. I got my Exeter viewbook and packet the other day - it’s very pretty lol. I like the course cards. :stuck_out_tongue:
I’m telling myself not to choose between them until after I receive my acceptance letters for any of them - don’t want to be devastated.
Does location play a part in admissions to these schools? I live in North Carolina, and I’m worried that they’ll consider the kids in Boston, New Haven, etc. over me, down south.

i think that would have the opposite effect… isn’t NC like, underrepresented? (i’m terribly underinformed in terms of US geography + populations at BS) but they really like diversity. if a student from say, nebraska, and a student from boston had the exact same stats, they would probably pick the one from nebraska. diversity, ftw. :P

yeah, the exeter viewbook is pretty sweet. i would have to say that the choate one was probably the best imo, though, lol. collectable trading cards, ftw!

ps: just curious. why did you decide to inquire to concord but not milton? haha, i don’t know too much about either other than that they’re supposedly “similar”, but i’m very interested in both. :)

People to go to for advice:

bunnywins, check out st. andrews. I think they have a few kids from n.c. and it is much closer than the new england schools.

I second catg’s suggestion, not just for bunnywins but anyone. Everyone who is willing to look outside new england should consider St. Andrew’s in delaware. It’s as selective as any of the HADES GCM schools (I know this as a fact from some people who are really into this field - don’t let their seemingly higher admit rate deceive you - their applicant pool is self-selective simply because they don’t get tons of students from NE simply “giving it a try”).

More than on SSATs or anything, work on your essays. Especially at the relatively smaller schools like Groton, SPS and St. Andrew’s they are given a lot of weight and they allow you to stand out. Show them the person behind those test scores and ECs, and you’ll do really well in the process. And as crazy as this sounds, try to enjoy writing your essays. If you enjoy them, then you know that you’re doing something right.

I’m applying this year.
I’ve sent out inquiries to Exeter, Groton, St. George’s, Milton, Concord, and some day schools.
Bunnywins, I agree. The course cards were a nice touch. :]
Also, if anything, I’d think that schools would want a more diverse community. If I was a boarding school, I’d prefer kids from all over the world before kids from the same state as the school. That’s just me, though :]
lemons.can.fly, I’d hold off on the essays if I were you. A new school year is about to start; Your writing style will improve by January 15. I thought about writing them this summer, too, but the Secondary Schools Advisor at my school advised against it.

Im applying to St. George, st. pauls , philip exeter ,mccallie, baylor, episcopal. Im just a small town country boy from alabama. Im pretty excited.

Does anyone know mccallie or baylors admmisiosn rate

I’ll hopefully be applying as a repeat junior!
I know this sounds weird compared to most of you guys, but i’m only going to apply to one school, The Emma Willard School. I just love Emma. Of course, I’d love to be for sure attending boarding school, but that’s just not possible. My parents and I made a deal. I’ll apply to Emma and if I get in with enough FA, I can go. I’m pretty happy-BS has always been a dream of mine!
