I’m just curious b/c I’ve heard rumors that sometimes selective colleges like Brown have “quotas” depending on which state/geographic area you are from…so anyone out there from the DMV area?

Hi K8T1995! I’m applying ED, from MD.

There are no quotas. Brown tries to have geographic diversity, but they will not turn down a great student just because he/she is from an overrepresented area.

The 3 states you mentioned are too large to define a “quota”. Usually regional committees have acceptances that overall stay steady from year to year, but they’ll definitely admit someone if they are worthy, or admit fewer from that region if they are not. That’s why freshman enrollment does vary from year to year.

Oh, ok I feel silly now. Thanks guys for filling me in on this. Heard it from my best friend in my hs, guess I shouldn’t believe everything I hear.

there is a variation depending on “lesser represented” areas. However there can be a lot of students from one area, or even sometimes one school, depending on Brown’s recent experience with that school. (a school with a strong rep of very good students applying, actually matriculating at Brown, and doing well once at Brown, will have a higher “accept percentage” than a school that is an unknown, or has a “poor turnout” at Brown.) But that is just a minor factor. The most important criteria is the academic strength of the applicant.
