Does anybody know? Do grandparents count? Grad school or just undergrad?
Apologies–I could not find it on the website.

I don’t think anyone knows the answer to this question. UG parent(s) would be a yes but no one really knows how much. Beyond that, I assume it’s helpful but likely in a diminishing manner.
I do know a double parents plus a grandparent legacy twins who were both waitlisted 5+ years back. And the kids were certainly academically and EC-wise quite qualified. They ended up attending top notch schools elsewhere.
If I remember correctly the specific question on the common app for Chicago regarding legacy is worded really strange. At other schools they asked: Do you have relatives who attended the school, then asked you to pick which relative from a list. At Chicago it asked the same fist question. Then gave you a list but Dad/Mom are not listed on it. I think it asked, is your relative on this list, and you had to say no, if it was your parent. That’s it. Otherwise you picked grandparent, uncle, aunt etc.
Thought it was a strange way of asking the question.
Your parents info goes on the common app? No?
@ihs76 Yes, in the common part of the app which goes to all schools. This question was in the supplement part, specific to UChicago. I just thought it was strange that they asked it so differently from most other schools.
The other schools are asking a question that’s redundant for legacy parents. Chicago will just look at the Common App, where they can find the same information.
The thrust of the question would probably be clearer if it read “…any relatives other than your parents,” but it avoids duplicating information, which seems like the simplest way to go.
