@kef, UCSC isn’t for everyone. From how you described yourself, it sounds like you would definitely be more suited at another one of the colleges you listed.

I, on the other hand, feel perfectly fitted for UCSC. I’m liberal, gay, and enjoy the atmosphere of UC Santa Cruz. The fact that there aren’t any frat/sorority parties is a huge plus for me. I don’t smoke weed but it isn’t something that bothers me, nor interests me. The town I currently reside in is moderate-conservative, I mainly picked UCSC because it would be a nice change of pace from my current situation.

Overall, I’m thrilled to be going there. It gets a little bit irritating to hear people who don’t know anything about the school (aside from the stereotypes) say, “Oh, so you smoke weed?” or, “Oh, you’re a radical liberal?”

A friend of mine said to me, “My dad told me not to go there, because it turns girls into lesbians.” Oops, too late.

For those of you somewhat similar to myself, UCSC feels like the perfect match.

I have been admitted into UCSC as a transfer. It wasn’t my first choice, but am glad to have some sort of plan. My sister lives in Ben Lomond and my grandmother will be moving from Palm Desert to there. I will certainly miss LA, but will be nice to be amongst family and back in Santa Cruz for a while. I have yet to hear back from the film program, but I don’t think it will be a problem getting accepted. Anyone else applying for the film program?

@inthemorning
it seems we have similar thoughts on my situation lol…
and yes i did apply to UCSB, but was denied. it was actually my #1 choice but oh well.
SCU was my #2 choice so I’m really hoping haha…

as for UCSC, if I simply run out of luck and end up going here, what college would be my best bet? since there are 10 different residential colleges on campus, where would I find the kind of people who I could fit in with?

to help with that, I should probably mention I’m a moderate conservative, not gay, enjoy sports, like to workout/lift weights, wouldn’t mind an occasional party, not a stoner but not against partying lol I’m not sure how to phrase that.
oh and does anyone have a clue as to the female population of UCSC? lol

Aww, that’s unfortunate. That’s alright though, being waitlisted for SCU sounds hopeful. Make sure you follow up on your waitlist by sending an extra letter of rec. or two… haha, and if it’s not too far, hand deliver them with another statement of why you think SCU is best for you. Stuff you already heard before, I’m sure.

As for UCSC college, I think you’d do great at Cowell. I don’t know about the girls, hehehe

going. Got into santa barbara too, but I think you’d have to be pretty nuts to go there as a freshman, too intense for me. may go as a transfer…

Uh, Brythellama, if you’re not going to UCSB as a freshman don’t really count on going as a transfer, UC-UC transfer isn’t priority and besides they’ll know you rejected UCSB for UCSC so why would that give them incentive to accept you again?

I just want you to know be clear about your goals before making ill-informed decisions, but if your heart isn’t set at UCSB and is at UCSC then good move! It just seems like you’re still unsure, I suggest you learn more about both schools before making a decision.

@schooldad - why go from UCSD to UCSC? just not sure why someone would do that…

@brythellamma - i wish i had the option to go to UCSB… lol especially as a freshmen. if i was you i would accept in one minute lol. thats just me though…

@inthemorning - yes im accepting to UCSC so that i wont be stuck without a school to go to. however if i find out that im accepted from the wait list from Santa Clara University or CSULB i am pretty sure i will accept them and decline UCSC. I’d choose both SCU and CSULB over UCSC, however with significant preference to SCU.

Hi! Im attending Santa Cruz
My housing choices areeee
cowell, college 8, stevenson, c19
but if I get into UCSB through appeal I’m going to accept.
UCSC is just WAY too close to home

How close is close? I live just over the mountain, but the drive is so twisty-windy that it still takes an hour to go to and from. Kind of nice because I can get home on weekends if I need to (job interviews and stuff).

I know what you mean. Everyone laughs at me for not going to Ucla but it is way to close to home. Plus ucla doesn’t have sweet redwood trees on campus!

I’m from Crown. The core course has NOTHING to do with math. The focus changes a little bit each year because they’re always updating the curriculum, but this year it was about genetic engineering. You don’t go in-depth about the science. It’s mostly discussing if it’s ethical, how it should be used in the law (should we take DNA samples of everyone who is arrested) and how it should be used on a personal level (should you genetically engineer your children to be the best possible?). I thought it was really interesting, we even got to watch Blade Runner in class.

I’d say it’s pretty big. A lot of the video game design majors end up here, for one. That’s why there’s going to be a video game themed house. And then there are tons of casual players. There are groups of players for Pokemon, Left 4 Dead 2, WoW, CoD4, Team Fortress 2, Super Smash Brothers and plenty of others. Super Smash Bros can get kind of competitive, but otherwise it’s all casual. There’s a Steam UCSC group, too. :]

Thanks once again Liesel. Just changed my college affiliation to Crown once again, thanks to your description of the core class and the video game scene description. :D
