Who plans on attending Reed?

I was wondering who plans on attending Reed if they get accepted and main reason why...

I'm pretty sure that Reed has moved ahead of Chicago to the #1 spot (though it probably won't matter---I don't expect I'll get in there). I'm interested in being in a community of scholars---"knowledge nerds," as it were---who are devoted to that delightful clich

danielsh ever read any Sartre...writing my fun senior paper to graduate high school on his revision of Marxism

oh and depending on trips to other schools I will probably end up at reed. It is tied with NYU right now but I am seriously wondering if i could handle business majors

Blah. I don't know anymore. Turns out I didn't receive financial aid.

Right now, of the schools I've gotten into, there's about a

41% chance I'll end up at Reed, a
38.5% chance I'll end up at Gallatin (at NYU), a
9% chance I'll end up at Eugene Lang (New School University), a
6% chance I'll end up at Oberlin, a
3% chance I'll end up at Evergreen, and a
2% chance I'll end up at University of Wisconsin, Madison, and a
0.5% chance I'll end up not going to college at all.

Or maybe it's 41% for Gallatin, and 38.5% for Reed. Damnit, I have no idea. Anyone have any ideas on those two (or any of the others, for that matter)?

Of course, I'm still waiting to hear from Harvard, Brown, and Wesleyan (and since I got rejected from Haverford and Swarthmore, those three are seeming less likely).

Ben

"danielsh ever read any Sartre...writing my fun senior paper to graduate high school on his revision of Marxism"

No, unfortunately. But I'll be spending the last six weeks of high school studying utopian thought in literature, so I'll definitely have to add him to the list. Would you recommend any particular works?

PM me if you want to have a conversation about this... your project sounds very cool.

i suppose you've read 1984...i'm reading it right now, very cool.

can you elaborate on this: "And there's no better place to find comrades willing to help start the revolution."

No Exit is a great play he wrote and short. The Wall is a great short story that is interesting and Nausea which is a longer novel.

I assume you have Milton and More. I read those and really only liked More. Huxely is great as well. I love to read and Reedies seem like they do as well. I guess that is why I will end up going I bet.

I'll look for those, I'm not complaining, 'cause i love reading in spanish, but its hard to get books in english here + i'm not into the whole shopping on the internet thing...

i love to read, too but i havent been doing it much lateley. don't know why..hmm

*commie and damn proud of it. (they didn't like that much when i went to a scholarship interview at wake forest)

I wasn't considering Reed a viable option because I never expected to get in...

But, I got in with some good aid so... who knows.

"can you elaborate on this: 'And there's no better place to find comrades willing to help start the revolution.'"

I'm a revolutionary Marxist, and I suspect that a great many Reedies are too. So I'm looking forward to attending a school full of people who think like I do---who will be willing to march on the front lines when the revolution comes.

With regard to literature: 1984 is one of my favorite books. I normally throw something in here about how Orwell was a socialist---virtually a Trotskyist---and the book was an attack on Stalinism rather than Marxism, but this is a Reed forum. We're all on the same page.

I've read More, but Milton comes later in the year. My English Lit class will be reading it before (or maybe right after...) the AP exam. And I will definitely check out some Sartre. My World Lit class is doing existentialism, so he might be worth reading now. Thanks for the recommendations!

I am a marxist aswell. I've never met an american who was a marxist revolutionary, then again i don't know many americans. I guess ill meet many american marxists if i attend reed, cool..

just out of curiosity, what do you think about che guevara?

great, ive lived in San Francisco all my life, my best friend is a russian immigrant, im a card-carrying member of the ACLU, and all of a sudden Im afraid of going somewhere because it might be TOO radical! I never knew there was such a thing... but you guys make this sound like Reed is full of nothing but pinkos and vegans, or combinations of the two.
And to warn all of you vegans out there.. for every animal you Don't eat, I'm going to eat Three!

I look forward to some, (ahem) interesting conversations... I just hope that you don't all expect to just be debating yourselves.

funny you mention that. I'm actually carving a graffiti tribute to che on a desk at school. it sounds stupid but I was just sitting there and had to do something. I'm not a marxist (yes, go ahead and laugh at the democratic socialist) but I do respect what he fought and died for. I've been looking for a copy of the Motorcycle Diaries but haven't found one yet. (the book not the movie, I hate most movies)

Claringa, why did you apply to wake forest? you seem too good for them. ;)

now as for diet I eat chicken. I do not eat pork though since I'm allergic to it and will not touch beef because it tastes wierd and I'm afraid of prions.

all kidding aside, I thought motorcycle diaries was an EXCELLENT movie, and admite che very much.

*admire
stupid ten characters

i greatly admire che, beyond all the legend that surrounds him, because he was a true revolutionary and advocator of latin american empowerment. i do believe, though, that he made various mistakes in his mission in Bolivia. I live a couple of hours from where he was killed and recently visited his monument and the place where he was captured. anyway, motorcycle diaries is an extremely well done movie, but although i love the mexican actor that plays che, or ernesto, i don't think he did that awesome of a job. alberto was very well played.

*i love meat and dont eat anything green, except an occasional lettuce in a hamburger. what the hell is a pinko?

-Claringa, why did you apply to wake forest? you seem too good for them. :):):) thanks cantstandmenow

I applied there cause i thougt i had a pretty good chance for a full-tuition scholarship. i actually made it to the 20 finalists and they flew me over for various interviews, but they didn't give it to me. i didn't like it much when i visited anway.

I'm going to Brown :)
