I'm starting to consider going home friday-saturday night/sunday morning every other week. Won't be anything for me to do those nights since I don't party.

Is the amtrak student discount good? The LA-SB ticket is already pretty cheap though.

yeah im kinda curious about it too. Maybe not EVERY weekend for me but I want to go back home and visit LA at least once a month or so. Was thinking of bringing a car but the risk of getting into an accident/costly parking fees is making me double think… how cheap is the amtrack?

Back when I was a freshman, I traveled back South by Amtrak about every 2-3 weeks. The amtrak discount is a must, since you will definitely get back what you paid for quickly and also receive discounts for merchandise. Also, the discount only works if you book the ticket 3 DAYS in advance. Ticket prices vary on the day (~20-30 bucks to ~30-45 bucks on holidays).

cowman, I think you’re setting yourself up for a tough time at school. Even though some of us told you that many people take part in activities over the weekend that don’t involve drinking (including a number of posters here), you keep mentioning that there is nothing to do, which is not true. My concern is that leaving most weekends will prevent you from establishing social bonds at the school, which will in turn just make you dislike the school even more.

Well I couldn’t really find anything that I liked besides “joining clubs,” which even then my favorite ones may not meet on the weekend.

I did the same in high school (and 1-8th), I’m on a permit and live further away that everyone else. I just stuck with my neighborhood friends and made acquaintances at school. I still ended up being very active in the few hours I was at school, up to running and founding our student union. I also do love my high school, that’s why I sacrifice my own time and money to make the SU actually work.

I’ve always preferred to keep my social life separate from my academic life and its worked fine before. Plus, LA is the town for me, I can’t stand for the life of me small towns, they really make me feel depressed.

I’m probably going to be taking the greyhound from SB to SD every couple weekends or so, 5 hours on average, which is the same time as amtrak for some reason, and it’s cheaper.

I would do the drive myself, which is only 3 1/2 hours or so, but gas money would probably cost about the same as the greyhound ticket ($40-45), would put alot of mileage on my car, and I’d rather chill and study without getting stressed out over california drivers

i only went home during breaks and holidays, and even then i didnt leave right away when i had an apartments, i stayed a week or so after my finals, when i was in the dorms they kicked us out so thats when i was forced to go home earlier than i wanted to
