ahh i called up exeter on the 15th asking about my decision and i was told that my application had not been reviewed because it was incomplete and missing the extracurricular rec and grades(!) freaking out, i told the lady that i was attending a school that did not issue grades and that my speech/debate rec had been mailed out quite awhile ago. she went through my file and lo-and-behold, my rec was in there and there was a note from an adcom confirming my situation w/ my grades. she assured me that everything would be fine, my application would be looked over, it'd be considered timely, etc. and to wait next week for an adcom to contact me regarding a decision.

fastforward to today- mom called admissions this morning and was told that my app MIGHT be looked over in May if there was room, ie my app was considered late, and they didnt even look at my app im guessing???

i emailed admissions today asking for an explanation, but im feeling incredibly frustrated right now, you have no idea. :( i sent in EVERYTHING on time, i did EVERYTHING correctly, exeter's my number one choice, and because they messed up my paperwork theyre not even going to look at my app?? w-t-f, i paid the $50 app fee for them to do that for me. at this pt now, i know ill prolly not get in because of this stupid mistake- (pretty sure it wasnt MY mistake...)

if id at least gotten a rejection letter in the mail, then id know "hey, they DID look at my app" but no, i havent gotten ANY notice from them. :(

i feel really mentally exhausted right now, this past month has been incredibly stressful for me- my dad went through his first month of chemo, the guys at my new boarding school have been complete a-s-s-e-s to me, and heck, i just want closure right now w/ this whole boarding school application process. :( anyone else here wanna vent about boarding schools?? hahaha

hahaha...it was frustrating for me, too. The guidance counselor at my school had a rule that SHE needed to send everything out and she lost everything. Stupid me, I didn't photocopy anything and I technically did my Andover application twice.

Anyways, if they don't end up giving you a spot, i'd demand my money back.. I'm dead serious...

Sorry. that sounds very frustrating, and it seems unfair. When you feel calmer, you should talk to the person who said your ap would be reviewed the next day to ask her what you can do.

You're the second person that Exeter did this to this year...and that's just among CC regulars.

What did the LionLinks web site say? Did it say your application was complete?

Again, my recommendation to Chaos Theory (re: Deerfield) applies here. Tell them you want your money back. They cannot in good faith keep it under the pretense that you're getting the same shot at getting in that you would have if they had done their job and not bolloxed up their paperwork. A $50 refund really isn't a fitting remedy for this sort of screw up, but it really frosts me to think that you got totally hosed once AND they're going to run through a sham review of your application to hose you out of the $50 to boot.

There was one other poster here who got the expedited review from Exeter. She'd already gotten into (I believe) Choate, Deerfield and Andover. Exeter screwed up the paperwork, said they'd do a review (yeah, right...with the school community away on break!) and, lo and behold, she got rejected. Having Choate, Deerfield and Andover as your worst-case-scenario fall back position isn't so awful. But it's also instructive as to what kind of odds applicants face during these "Oh, our bad! We'll get back to you next week" decisions.

That's why you might as well get your $50 back. You've got better odds at getting in if you took that $50, bought MegaMillion lottery tickets for the next 50 draws and then use your winnings to endow chairs in the specialty disciplines of Organizational Management, Quality Control and Customer Service at Exeter on the condition that they offer you admission.

(BTW, I really like Exeter…but I can only hope that the Admission Office is not a microcosm of the broader community or a harbinger of what awaits applicants as they matriculate.)

ok so i called up exeter and tried to explain my situation and was basically told that id be put into the 2nd round of admissions, but the lady said that she'd 'talk to the adcoms about it'.

ahh so i guess at this pt just wait and see? >.< hopefully everything will turn out alright- imean even if they end up not accepting me (haha which is very well possible), at least ill get a formal letter of rejection instead of a 'lets forget about this students app and shove it to the bottom of the pile'...

im thinking about reapplying next year, just because of all the resources that schools like A/E have to offer... maybe ill apply to deerfield, little brother got in this year. :)

Why withdraw at this point? I think I would wait and see, sure you could get your $50 back and make a point, but wouldn't you always wonder if you would have gotten in during the second round of admissions?
Perhaps the bigger point here is that applicants should make sure that they double check to make sure that all their application materials are in. This means calling the admissions office and not just checking the computer links, because I think we have seen one girl who did check the LionLinks info and thought everything was all set, only to learn too late, that it was not.

woww sabregiel, my condolences to you, i've never heard of that before

well, exeter admissions are pretty "chill", so i would recommend you to request to speak with the dean of admissions, or just anybody higher up. then explain your situation, and i'm sure they will understand, or at least let you come to experience exeter.

if anything, you can write an emotional email to one of the admissions guys. what happened to you was completely unfair, and their mistake should not be the reason you have to miss out on exeter for a whole year.

@ chacha: As I posted at #4 above, the chances of Exeter finding a space for her now is basically nil. They screwed up but they're not going to find a space. Not now. Game over.

Let's look at it in one of 2 ways. First if they are sincerely bothered by their error (and lets face it with the sheer number of applications they have to handle, errors will happen), they would have gotten back to you with a decision within 48 hours of acknowledging their error and would have either offered you a slot (if you obviously would have gotten one) or told you up front that you are #1 on their waiting list, pending the yield from the first offers.

In the second way of looking at it, they are happy with the applicants they offered slots to and aren't particularly bothered by the fact that they may have missed a good one because they were overwhelmed by the large volume of good candidates. They are taking the position of stuff happens and will put you in the waiting list with all the other courtesy applicants no matter how well you measured up as there are lots of deserving kids out there.

I'd be guessing at the latter with what you have reported.

I would request the refund at this point, and at this point it would have a carbon copy to the headmaster with the exact details, because you don't know whether your admission or denial is a legitimate decision. If they admit you, is it because they are covering their tracks out of guilt or if they waitlist/deny you, is it because you pointed out their error? Either way you should let them know that you feel you cannot trust their evaluation of your application and therefore have not gotten what you paid for.

A letter of apology would be nice from them, but I wouldn't hold my breath on it.

If she hasn't already decided to do so, ask your mother to speak with the Director of Admissions. He is the person responsible for setting policy on what to do with errors like this, and at the very least, he should be aware of the errors the staff made. I don't think it would be to your advantage to withdraw your application because Exeter is your #1 choice, and you are thinking about reapplying next year. Sorry this happened to you.

Do I think it is likely that Exeter will find a spot? No, BUT, my point is why withdraw now?? Asking for your $50 back now to "make a statement",seems counter-productive, why not wait until you see how Exeter responds? As to your "megabucks" analogy.... you can't win if you don't play! and if she withdraws her application she is totally out of the game.
As mad and frustrasted as you become with a situation, sometimes it is best not to act in haste.
IMO, BurbParent has the best suggestion: have your parent speak to the DIRECTOR of Admissions.

tabor put my application as late and messed up the fa.At my interview i had completed it and it was on time.So i got accepted and have waitlist for fa.THese schools need to work on their filing skills

@ chacha: That wasn't an analogy with the megabucks. I'm saying that the odds are better if you spend your $50 on that and trying again next year.

Let's be honest here...she's basically applying as a late admission. Would she have done that if they didn't take her money earlier? No, I don't think so.

I'm not saying ask for the money back to make a statement. I'm saying they screwed her over once by totally flubbing her file. Why roll over and have them run through what will be a sham review and get screwed over twice. Take the money -- or ask to have it credited towards next year if there's no room this year -- and cut the losses.

If you think there's still room, consider that there's already been someone else that this happened to at Exeter this year. She was ACCEPTED at Deerfield, St. Paul's and Andover. Exeter said, "Okay, we'll look it over and get back to you." Exeter was her first choice. And they said "Oops, sorry, thanks for playing but we can't admit you." I've got to assume that that person was as strong a candidate as you're going to see. And they screwed her not once, but twice by giving her what appears to be a sham review.

Frankly, Exeter should be offering to refund the admission money even if they give this candidate a late review.

She got screwed. It happens. And the false hope they're extending her has people just totally bumfuzzled. It's game over. Buy some lottery tickets if you think you're got enough luck and positive karma going for you that they might actually admit her at this point.

Hmmmm, you say it is not to make a statement, but you go on about Exeter "flubbing" her file, and you talk about people getting "screwed" and "bumfuzzled", it just seems like a lot of anger. I just thought it might be wise to wait and see what the end result is.
And FYI, I personally know 3 very qualified students who applied to Exeter, Andover, Deerfield and/or Choate and they got into two or three and not into the other, it is not that uncommon.

I had everything done by the dead line but exeter didnt send me anything either!!! so i called and they said i didnt have an interview BUT I DID!!! turns out my interviewer didnt submit my information!!!

i can totally relate... i feel really sorry for you, you must be frantic right now!

get your parents to call the admissions office! did you get into any other schools! i got into andover so i think i'll go there and channel by hate for the adcom into school sporit lol!!

good luck... i got rejected though, after i called like 3000000 times they sent me an email to tell me there wasnt enough space... sigh.
