Who's applying ED to Penn?

maani, 15 people from my school were accepted into Penn last year so I would not be too worried if I were you.

Does anyone know if having a parent in the Upenn Faculty helps your ed chances?

holy %#$@! 15??? That’s insane!

thanks hardworking and casablanca! you guys did make me feel better. that’s unexpected of CC members hahah

and casablanca, i would think that it helps your chances since they asked us about that in our applications…didn’t they?

@casablanca

…15?! That’s ridiculous! Do you go to Choate or Exeter or something?

Haha. I did not include the fact that over 50 applied last year from my school , but it still shows that way more than one person can get it from each high school.

And no, I go to a large public school right a little bit outside of Philadelphia

Typically about 15-20 kids apply to Penn each year from my school with about 3 of them getting in.

We also sent 6 kids to Yale in 2010 … do we count as a feeder school? Haha.

@aangel42

Yes! I have heard Penn Masala and seen them on Youtube! And I’ve been to their site and heard their official recordings… AAAMAZING!
awwww! I should have used something about being Indian and Penn Masala, etc. in my Penn essay!!!
You know what’s sad? Every day I think of more interesting things I could have said for that essay :(

I REALLY REALLY REALLY WANT TO GO TO PENN LIKE SOOO SO BADLY!
Yeah a really close friend of mine is applying to Wharton ED (oh god, the competition. shes basically taken the same APs I have)
But we’ll see!

@maani9422: Hey, that’s what CC is for, at least, I think so once your app is in. Stop the criticism, the fighting, etc…lets all keep our fingers crossed! All we can do now (pretty much).

I definitely think that Penn ED applicants will be lesser now because H/P EA means people get to take a risk earlier (tempting for the more competitive applicants), and if it doesn’t work out, they always have the option of applying Penn Regular and not being bound to attend Penn (in case their H/P deferrals work out). So no doubt the number of ED applicants WILL go down. That’s not to say that people who love Penn won’t apply - they still will (Regular - if they don’t get into H/P or of course Y/S/M), but if they’re getting the chance to TRY for something “higher up the scale” earlier on, it only follows by simple logic that they would.

Secondly, I think because Penn is clearly expecting lesser applicants for Regular Decision (since because of H/P EA there will be a higher proportion of students who will know earlier on where they’re headed next fall), and since Penn does (indirectly) feel that the more qualified applicants will be applying to H/P EA, they will increase their ED admit rate slightly this year (since the ED applicant pool is obviously super qualified to attend Penn). This could also go the other way - since more people who have been rejected from H/P in the early round will apply Regular and so as Dean Furda said, Penn’s yield rate will be higher, so with the expectation of having more qualified applicants for Regular who have been rejected from H/P, they might just admit a slightly lesser percentage of Early applicants. But honestly, I don’t think they would take that risk…

SO, keeping all of the above in mind, I honestly believe that:

 1. This year, Penn ED applicants will be lesser - those that have applied are some of the most qualified and “die hard Penn” applicants Penn can expect and so…
 2. The ED admit rate will increase by a slight percentage this year

Comments?
Aaaand who has submitted supplementary material to Penn this year? Come on guys, the deadline is over, you CAN answer this question :P

@aangel42

lol. ok. i submitted research abstracts and an art cd that penn admissions people may or may not be able to see, and i’ll never know haha
and a research rec (keep in mind, i only did this because i’m deep in art and deep in research-- consecutive for three summers and i literally lived in the lab while i was there no joke)

and also… has anyone heard of the penn philomathean society?
IT IS SOOO AWESOME and i laugh at all of those who say penn is too preprofessional.
if i get in, i’m DEF joining it :slight_smile:
and i’m joining the DP. and i’m joining the Undergraduate Assembly and SCUE… OHHH GOD HAAHHA

I am feeling so nervous now after seeing all these chance threads.

So based on this forum/thread, how many CC members do you think here have applied ED to Penn?

Lol, why don’t you just count the number of different people who replied to this thread?

Also, I am feeling so ambivalent as to how I should be dealing with this “application limbo” period … should I expect to get rejected or be optimistic and rather certain that I’ll get in? If I expect to be rejected, I’m probably being more realistic, but at the same time, I feel depressed that 1) I’m not going to Penn, 2) I have to do more applications. If I am optimistic about it, then if I get rejected, it’ll hit twice as hard …

How are you guys dealing with the next 4-5 weeks or so?

Because many people replied more than once, so I can’t get a good feel for the number of CC members. And I bet there are even more non CC members that are pretty strong applicants out there in the real world.

I think I will just try to ignore my Penn application for the next few weeks, while I focus on my other college apps. And by exploring/completing other college apps, I hope I sort of “forget” about Penn and get neurotic about another college. So by the time I get my decision it will be either a great surprise or a disappointment that I can brush off.

So I emailed Penn a week ago wondering if they ever got my supplemental recommendation letter (which was faxed) and I got an email today saying that they dont confirm supplementary stuff.
wow. so helpful.

^ Did you email your regional admissions officer? That might help:

[Penn Admissions: Regional Admissions Officers](http://www.admissions.upenn.edu/current/regional.php)

yeah I don’t think the regional admissions officers can confirm that either.
I’m especially worried because Penn has been having stormy weather and such, but you just have to trust that it’s there.
When I emailed, she said “I saw your file, and you’re fine”

YAAAAY someone saw my file! I have a file! and also… she didn’t confirm anything :(

I emailed them too. I got the same reply. Let’s just hope USPS doesn’t ***** up this one time. Just please.

wow sounds like there isn’t anyone on CC that didn’t send in supplementary material

i just sent in one extra rec, I feel like I’d be ticking them off if I sent them so much extra stuff, you know?

oh and free2rhyme, I completely agree with you

I have no idea how to deal with myself mentally until the 10th
all I know is that so far I’ve been bouncing back and forth

Only 2 ED to nursing so far??? I guess I make 3! So nervous for the decision…

How do you guys know the date the decision comes in? All I’ve seen is “mid-December”…
