I really want to get a medical internship next summer but I don't know where to start...do I call a hospital and ask or do I apply somewhere or what? Any help would be appreciated. Ty!

You have to start very early. Preferably 4-5 months in advance.

Some hospitals accept summer high-school student internships. So google hospital internships in your area.

But if you can’t find any, list any hospitals or clinics you want to get an internship from. Then send emails or talk to any teacher, friends of friends or people your parents know, basically anyone who are related to the medical field.

While waiting for their reply, email and set up an appointment with your school to ask if they can write you a cover letter and/or a letter of recommendation. You should also prepare a brief resume explaining why you want this internship and what you will be doing.

Cross check the email replies and the hospitals on your list to see if you have any connections. Then narrow down the list and call each one. Explain what you want to do and why you want the job. Sometimes, big hospitals doesn’t want internships because of patient confidentially or the costs involved. IF you think that’s the case, tell them you can be working in other non-medical related dept. like Customer Service, administration, or simply helping nurses transport medical equipments, etc. Or tell them you want to volunteer (no pay).

Try to get them to make an appointment with you before turning you down. Go to the hospitals and hand in all your documents. And explain again why you want the invaluable experience from this prestigious hospital.

A few days after the appointment, follow up.

If all else fails, I’m sure there are other charities and organizations that will gladly accept any volunteer.

Hope this helps! ;)

yes thank you that was really helpful i’ve tried emailing a bunch of doctors but unfortunately everyone seems to be turning me down saying they aren’t supposed to have any high school kids interning or that they have all the spots filled up already. i’ve tried a lot of doctors…what do you think i should do now? ty! :)

@314jason. I’m doing a medical research internship currently. But why would this internship be beneficial in regards to colleges and experience?

You could also try working at a university in a bio or medicine-related lab. I think PIs like free labor sometimes (if you find the right one). I did that in HS for two summers and it worked out pretty well. Also, universities tend to be a lot more fun than hospitals in my experience (one summer I did research in the hospital at the university and rarely left to actually go out into the university itself).
