Who's going to attend UCSD and why?

Because.....

it has your major?
it's located next to the beach?
it's a high ranking school?
it's located in SoCal?

What's your reason?

I know you asked who WILL be going to UCSD and while I won’t be attending, I want to share my reasons. I haven’t been to UCSD but I can safely say I won’t be going there. I was accepted under the Composite Literature major (UCSD does not have my intend). I personally don’t like the six college system and the way the GEs are set up differently for each college. I know they’re trying to diversify the campus, but it’s just not for me. I live in Orange County, about 15-20 minutes away from the beach, so that part doesn’t hold any appeal for me. And while most people consider it ranked higher compared to UCI, I would be much quicker to choose UCI over UCSD. UCI is also in close proximity to many plazas, shopping malls, and other places of interest.

I understand that for other people UCSD might be a better fit for them because they have a better program for their major. That isn’t true for me. And for some, going to UCI might mean that they have to commute instead of living on campus. I’ll be living on campus wherever I choose to go, so again, not a factor for me. Best of luck wherever you decide to go!

EDIT: I also wanted to say that for me, the gap between UCSD and UCI isn’t that great.

I would pick UCI (because of regents scholarship) and UCLA(social scene and many top recruiters frequently visit this campus) over San Diego because I also do not like their system.

In a way, I feel like it’s segregated. Whereas UCLA has a lot of school spirit.

Plus they don’t offer Civil Engineering (their version is structural engineering).

Good point, I forgot to mention that I was also offered the Regents Scholarship at UCI. From my experience, most people report that they get the least amount of aid from UCSD. Not sure if that’s true or not, we’ll have to see!

Besides my post, there are many positive things about UCSD. I just listed what I don’t like about it.

@silvertongue, are you an English major? I had to apply for Lit, too. What other UC English departments did you like?

Reasons I am going to UCSD:

It’s the best school that is commutable for me. I am a veteran transfer, and I own a house in Temecula.

I love San Diego, especially the La Jolla area. I am down there often, so it’s familiar territory.

If there’s any chance of getting a job in SD, I imagine UCSD won’t hurt.

I like their “Math & Econ joint major” program.

@fran2thelamp Yes I am an English major, one of the few I’ve seen around here on CC! I haven’t really taken a look at any specific school’s english program, although I know it’s a given that UCLA and UCB are excellent. I have also heard that UCI is good as well, although bio, business, and engineering are the more hallmark majors. Where do you want to go to pursue your English degree?

@silver I actually got the most aid from UCSD. I think it might be because UCSD is the cheapest UC. It only cost 30k, whereas the other UCs cost 32k

@mermaker If I’m not mistaken, all the UCs cost the same, but then UCSD has a $1,042 “UCSD campus fee”. That’s off the UCSD website and verified on the other sites.

@silvertongues yes, we’re one in a million! I’ve been trying to look deeper into their programs. I applied to UCSB, UCSD, Cal, and UCLA. I’ve gotten into SB and SD, waiting to hear from Cal and LA. I’ve also heard that Irvine has a good English department, along with Cal and SB. I’m looking for the most hands-on English department. I’ll PM you if I find anything amazing!

@fran Really? on my financial aid it says estimated cost 30,608. I guess if you add the 1,042, It would cost the same as the other UC’s.

Every UC campus has separate campus/student fees they’re just usually shown already combined with the UC systemwide tuition/fees in one category. UCSD isn’t exceptional in that regard.

@mermaker
Your estimate already includes the UCSD campus fee. The total estimated cost for this academic year was $30,045. It looks like next year it will go up to $30,608.
[Budgets for Undergraduates 2012-2013](http://students.ucsd.edu/finances/financial-aid/budgeting/undergrad-2012-13.html)

All of the UC’s have a separate estimated cost of attendance because of the difference in housing/meal plans and campus fees. However after that is factored in for you pretty much get the same amount for the other categories at all the UCs, usually within a few hundred dollars of each other. For example, the allocated amount for Books/Supplies, Personal, and Transportation combined is about $3700 at both UCLA and UCSD. Even though UCLA’s estimated cost is about $2000 more than UCSD, you aren’t getting $2000 more of personal income. In actuality, it just comes straight out of housing because housing is more expensive at UCLA.

I am going to UCSD because:

It is an absolutely beautiful campus and every time I go there I always get the feeling that it’s where I’m supposed to be (I’m sure many other people get that feeling about their dream school). I love the Geisel library, the “forest” with the singing tree, and walking across campus is really peaceful. There are a lot of really interesting things about the campus that I really like (the little lopsided house that’s on top of the building/the fact that Dr. Seuss got inspiration from the trees on the campus-I am a writer so that’s really inspiring to me).

I got into the major I wanted the most out of all the UC campuses I applied to. (Literature/Writing)

I have stayed in the dorms before and I love the atmosphere. Also, La Jolla is really nice area. Plus, you are close to the beach and if you go to UTC or other malls you will see a lot of students from other schools hanging out too which is really cool (at least whenever I go there they are).

Again, San Diego is gorgeous. Sun God also seems like a really fun experience and it’s free for students.

I like the college system. Because transfers either live on the village or off campus, you don’t have to worry about what college you’re going to live in and it’s more for your grad. requirements. But last year Conan O’Brian visited the campus, because it was a sixth college thing, all of the students in sixth college got to go for free. (my boyfriend is in sixth). I guess the colleges each have their own little things from time to time.

Edit:
Sprinkles is also in the shopping center across the street from the school soooo…that’s dangerous.
