Did anyone take the trouble to record how long other mail from MIT took to reach them?

I couldn't agree more.

Ah...the type of wisdom age builds :-).

What other mail? Are you talking about the RSVP forms, etc?

So yesterday when I ran out to my mailbox after school... I opened the hatch and saw the edge of a tube... I was so excitied I couldn't even move until I realized that the tube wasn't autucually from MIT but rather a poster from F.W. Olin College. It was horrible

atomic, i go to medina High

I hate it! Decision not in today, I guess. My decision will hopefully come in tomorrow!

How does the MIT decision come to your house? Mailbox or some postman come up to you and ring your door? Exactly how big is the "tube" thingy? Acceptance is nice, but hey, as a siemens semifinalist, MIT EA is SOOO much harder than getting semifinals (~300 out of only 1700 vs. ~377 out of 3098)
Cheer up guys!

hmm...
assuming ALL siemens people apply to MIT EA, but there are also ppl from USAMO, other science & math olympiad, etc. Come to think of it...maybe every body who get SOMETHING from like a national award can get it somehow, even during deferred reg action. Now if everyone from ISEF applies, we're kinda in a hole...its too many people. Somebody do the stats!

anyone in northern VA get anything? I heard from Matt's blog that at least two were accepted. Any news?

As a Siemens semifinalist, you probably have a better chance than me. I've written a research paper, but was unaware of Seimens Westinghouse. I guess I did mention that my paper should be published in the next edition of The Whitman Journal of Psychology. Hope its nearly equivalent to Siemens.

Friend of sons heard yesterday in PA--he's in!

allright if we needed some natl award (like Siemens) to get into MIT, im finished

but thats not what i got from them when i visited...they have so many research opps there, i dont think you have to have one b4 you get in...i hope not.

My letter still isn't in. I'll start being a bit more annoyed if it's not here tomorrow. ;)

I'm almost positive now that those of us who haven't heard back got deferred/rejected. What other possible explanation is there?

razz8806, you absolutely do NOT need a national award or even research to be admitted.

The "possible explanation" is that the mails aren't predictable. Take a few deep breaths, everyone, and practice patience. It's said to be a virtue... ;)

Ok so assuming no USAMO, Siemens, Intel, anything higher than maybe AIME, a decent SAT/ACT score (700+), about how many people get accepted, do you know?

And is it really a tube?

Yes it's really a tube, some kid had a picture of it on his website

confuoco.org or something like that

And "no USAMO, Siemens, Intel, anything higher than maybe AIME, a decent SAT/ACT score (700+)" I'm in that exact same boat, so no worries. And of course, plenty of those ppl get in, with the right ECs and recs and stuff, I'm guessing a lot do. The admissions rate for 1600s is only 50% or something like that.

Ok I'm praying its coming in soon. Not because I applied to MIT, but because my Linear Algebra textbook is coming w/ same mail priority. If it doesn't get here by friday, I"M GONNA FReaK!(I won't be able to do it all winter break! :( ).

Linear Algebra is interesting--so many applications! If you don't get your textbook, you can always work off OCW lectures and psets--that's what I did for 8.02.

my mail hasn't come today, and i'm really hoping that doesn't mean i've been deferred. I'm in louisville, ky, and one of my friends received his tube yesterday...anyone have any thoughts?
