Why apply ED to Boston University

Hi guys,

I’m currently new to college confidential so please excuse me for making any errors or asking stupid questions.

The objective of this discussion is to share our opinions or reasons for applying Early Decision to Boston University. Whether you are accepted, rejected or deferred I don’t really care. I just want to hear what you guys have to say.

So I am an international student planning to study Computer Science in the states (No S) I applied to a total of 16 colleges 13 in North America and 3 in Canada. I applied to NYU Courant and got rejected, but it was such a reach school so I wasn’t too worked up about it. I then decided to apply to Boston University through EDII. Again, I considered BU as a reach school because of it’s acceptance rate, SAT range and etc. My SATI wasn’t even in BU’s range but some how I got in to my intended major Comp Science CAS.

Now, here are my reasons for applying EDII to BU.

  1. Prestigious 2.CS department has concentration in DataMining and Machine Learning plus the intro course is taught in Python ( my fav)
  2. It's in the heart of Boston
  3. It's a large school
  4. Faculties in CS department has many cool research projects.
  5. They have Corporate Partners Program for the first time in CS department.
  6. (FRANKLY) I was quite desperate to get a good University since NYU rejected me.

To be honest, I am quite happy that I got into BU; however, considering it’s over priced tuition fees and Boston’s expensive living cost. I am not sure that my decision will have a huge Return on Investment. BU is not well known for it’s CS department and I might have a chance of getting in similar college that has high ranking for CS department. Well I guess just have to see how my freshman year goes.

Looking forward to hear your reasons.

Your’s faithfully,

CAS2020

Have you been to BU? Where did you hear about it? Like NYU, BU does not really have a traditional campus. At least that is my opinion. It is a kind of odd physical layout because it strings along the Charles River in an odd way.

BU’s CS program is not highly ranked in terms of prestige or top professors but you will get a solid education there-- Attending college in Boston, surrounded by thousands of other students from Northeastern and many others will provide you with an exciting experience–many local biotech, high tech and lots of start-ups hire computer science majors so there should also be plenty of internships and jobs after graduation. The majority of students don’t get grants or merit scholarships–most take out loans or parents pay full tuition–it’s surely a rich kids school or a school where students leave with huge loans that they will pay off over ten years. Decide carefully–Good Luck!
