Why Apply for Outside Scholarships if Financial Aid Covers it?

"Chances are good that any private scholarship(s) you receive will cover only a portion of your education costs. Also, the scholarship(s) you receive will be counted as a source of income and will be subtracted from other financial aid awards you may have otherwise received from your school."

Is the above ^ true? Does that mean it's pointless to apply for a Fastweb scholarship because even if I get the scholarship, that $ from the scholarship will just be subtracted from my financial aid package?

It depends.

If you apply to a school that does not meet 100% of your demonstrated need(gaps), an out side scholarship may help fill the gap.

If all of your need is met even at schools that give generous grant aid it is very possible that your package will include workstudy and some loans. The outside scholarship will reduce the loan portion of your financial aid package and will reduce the work study portion of your FA package.
