Girls are simply better students than men are. But they are not inherently more intelligent.

Now in varying fields such as math and literature? Yes there are gender differences, which all stem from brain differences (don’t let anyone ever tell you it’s “society”)

Seriously. I’m not even sure why I come in to the “college life” forum because some of it is so ridiculous… but part of me just enjoys watching the train-wreck.

Girls just make better students in general. More boys tend to drop out/don’t continue their education compared to girls. Thus, girls typically dominate the gender ratio at college.

Not saying men are lacking in intelligence.

Both sexes have their advantages when it comes to subjects. Boys are generally better at Math subjects; girls are generally better at English-related subjects. Different brains, different skills.

^ Look, i’m a neuroscience major and I get there are differences between the female/male brain, but nothing so substantial that men are naturally superior at Math because of their brains or whatever. I would say men are superior at physical strength because of the size/strength of their bodies, but mentally we’re pretty equal. It is true women/men seem to be attracted to certain subjects more. Our “different brains” don’t automatically lead to different skills.

^Cool! I want to be a neuroscience major. I thought that men tend to have better body and spatial orientation and that women are more adept at communication. Isn’t it because of these differences that men tend to gravitate towards math and women tend to gravitate towards language? Or is this difference negligible.

Woami - Brain differences could possibly account for behavioral differences, but no one can say for sure since everyone is influenced by upbringing, society and culture, so you can’t say men naturally excel at A while women naturally excel at B cause of our brains. But it could account for some behavioral differences and us gravitating toward different things.

For example, a woman’s brain has 11% more brain cells in the planum temporale, an area responsible for understanding and processing language. Women also have a wider corpus callosum (connection between hemispheres), and women have more mirror neurons, important for perceiving emotions. Based on this, one could argue, “women are naturally better at communication”, but societal factors come into play - maybe women are encouraged more to show emotions and talk about their feelings, while men are expected to be “tougher”? You can’t really say these negligible differences necessarily lead to certain things.

But let’s not hijack this thread…you can PM me if you wanna talk about this…I would hate if this became a gender argument. :)

lol, i was just curious and it was taken to a whole new level of men vs. women.
I would actually prefer it to be more women than men, but that’s just me.

Most HS guidance counselors are women. And girls seek out guidance more than boys.

If a boy looks like he is getting bored and might bring down the schools averages then he’s told to officially withdraw, get his GED and go directly to Community College - that way he gets a jump on life and won’t be board. Many withdraw and almost done get a GED and go on. (but he never shows up as a drop-out from his HS)

Schools allow military recruiters to sit with the boys at lunch and they want more than a few good men.

Community colleges are being turned into vocational schools and working hands on still appeals more to M that F.

Boys are sold sports as a way to succeed while girls are told to study.

Fighting for any reason (including defending someone) will get you automatically suspended, and top colleges don’t like suspensions.

I could go on… but what it adds up to is having fewer boys ready, willing, and able to attend top Colleges.

but all that having been said all that, I bet I could also come up with a list that justifies the gender gap from a womens point of view just as easily… We could start with the fact that many schools are concerned with their M/F ratio and if M are in short supply then maybe it’s easier for them to get into some schools.

Life is and will continue to be so unfair - study hard and lets get on with it…

^ interesting article, thanks for posting it…I didn’t know there was a correlation between natural disasters/economic hardship and birthrate of boys.
I personally don’t get why a mother with 4 healthy children is heartbroken over having just one boy. Kind of mean to publicly declare that in a newspaper where her 3 daughters can read that their mother is very upset because she “tried and tried” and ended up with 3 girls instead of more boys.
