Why are you majoring in what you're majoring in?

I'm majoring in literature because my parents made me:)

Your parents made you major in literature? That’s very strange… generally parents will make their students major in engineering, pre-med, accounting, etc. Literature generally isn’t a very lucrative major.

I’m majoring in economics because it’s by far my favorite subject, although the marketability aspect certainly plays into it.

I’m really curious why your parents would “make” you major in literature.

Idk my mother believes I should leverage my considerable strengths in literature

Also, dude, as an economics major, wouldn’t you say that atm there is kind of a glut of economics BAs on the market?

Interesting. One of my siblings majored in literature, but the situation was inverse: We all pressured them into using their literary skills for business/law and they refused and went with literature. I think they’re aiming for a professor position eventually.

Economics is diverse enough that if you don’t find a job as an “economist” (very rare), you can easily transition into accounting or finance certifications, of which the job openings are practically unlimited in places like LA, NYC, etc. If you have a personality you can also go into marketing, but I don’t lol. I do however live in California and can say from experience that top GPA econ. students will have lucrative offers.

My degree is a combination of:
Economics major (I love finance and am an active personal investor/trader).

 • Pre-Pharmacy requirements (partially as a “back up plan” but also because I’m fascinated by immunology, anti-aging, life extension, population control and ecology.
 • Any CIS/web development classes I could fit (just because I like web design and the classes feel like a hobby).

Amazing how many different subjects you can “specialize” in at university if you’re a transfer student and play your lower division CC classes just right.

Good thread, by the way.

Perhaps, but it just so happens that the #1 career sector is “business”, generally defined.
