Why Brandeis?

I’m currently a Soph in HS at the moment (So I’ll be a Junior next year and will really start thinking about college, I suppose), and I wanted to know, Why Brandeis? Why does this school catch your attention, and what about it makes it a good place for you to be?

I’ve been recieving mailings from Brandeis for awhile, and I’d really like to attend, moreso than I would most all other schools that I’ve looked into. I like the fact it’s in Boston (I’m from Phoenix, and want to go to school somewhere on the outskirts or just inside a big city). I also like the fact that their business school is solely focused on the international market, and that it is really in it’s developing stages still (I think it was founded in like 1991). I’d really like to participate in the development of a school program like that, I find that intriguing. Also, as a Jew I’d really like to go to a school that has Jewish influences at it’s core, but is not centered around faith.

Overall I just like the friendly tone I get from Brandeis. I feel as though they really want me, unlike some of the other schools that make me feel like I should beg and grovel for admissions.

Oh, one last thing
I’ve heard they can suck when it comes to FA, but it’s not a big deal to my family… yeah I know I’m lucky, so without that factor, what do you guys think?

Brandeis was founded in 1948, and has excellent programs in economics, including international economics. so while the program is always "developing", it's not new (and you would be better off in one that is not just beginning, anyway).

Brandeis awards some significant merit aid (as opposed to need-based aid) for students with very good grades and SAT scores, so concentrate on your classwork and the SAT's next year and the year after that, to both have a good chance at being admitted, as well as the possibility of at least a partial scholarship.

"I feel as though they really want me, unlike some of the other schools that make me feel like I should beg and grovel for admissions."

LOL! That made me laugh, because I know exactly what you're talking about cough BC COUGH. Anyway I chose Brandeis primarily because of its location and its small size. There are lots of advantages to being a student there-I'm not Jewish, but for Jewish students it's a great place to meet others of the same faith and discover more about your own faith. I sat in on an American Judaism class and it was quite fascinating. I think at Brandeis you will pretty much get a stellar education across-the-board, and everyone seems really chill and friendly. Boston is about a half-hour away, and I don't know if you've ever been there, but it is a FANTASTIC city (considerably colder than AZ, but better ;)...so much to do and so many college students to do it with). There are so many awesome things about Brandeis...one of them being the alumni. I mean, come on. Mitch Album? William Schneider? Debra Messing??? Lol. Anyway you still have PLENTLY of time to make your decision...you will probably change your mind about 1000 times, just keep those grades up so you will have some great options, and maybe I will see you as a member of the class of 2011!!!

Hopefully lol... Class of 2011 sounds hilarious actually... that's sooooooo far away QQ.

As for feeling as if the school really wants me.. I don't know, maybe I've fallen victim to a clever marketing school. All I kow is the school has me interested.

As for the economics school being old, I'm glad somebody said something. I knew it was popular, but did not know it's age. I would've truly looked like a fool if I had told everyone I know about my wanting to be a part of something that is evolving (although colleges constantly are) when it's really 50 some odd years old lol.

I still want to attend their business school though, it's entirely focused on international business, which is what I'm interested in. So all is good.

When I say I want to be involved in the "change" of the school, I mean I want to be involved in a smaller program where I will have the opportunity to show my personal skills... instead of being involved at a relatively largely school where it will be more difficult to excel as an individual. Not that Brandeis is a tiny school, though.

Eh, whatever, I'm rambling, and I feel as though perhaps I was a little premature with my enthusiasm.

Hi, I am a Turkish kid from New Jersey, I go to a magnet school, and I a major in Bio-Medicine in High School, and I have heard many great things about the Pre-Med program at Brandeis, I heard its a really great place and excellent at academics, so I would definitely reccomend it.

One thing to note about Brandeis is the emphasis on a well-rounded education. Studying economics, you won't JUST learn about econ. You'll be required to take classes in various departments. Plus, the majors (minus science majors) tend to be decently small, so double majoring is highly encouraged. I'm one of the few people I know who isn't, but then I'm a chem major.

Pre-med is excellent at Brandeis, though very difficult. Though I've heard if you can get past organic you'll be fine. Still, I know tons of people who became humanities majors after a semester of chemistry. >_<
