Why can't I write a good essay more than 24 hours ahead of time?

I just got done with my first early admission application. Whew. Anyway, I had written my SOP and a supplemental essay carefully over the last couple of weeks, then yesterday morning, as I got ready to submit, decided I didn't like them and tore both up and started from scratch. I kept working on them until an hour before the deadline, making substantial revisions, not just minor grammatical corrections. And I think both essays are much better for it, even if I didn't have quite as much time to proofread.

This is my first time. Hopefully next time I'll have a little better idea of what's required a little earlier. I can't keep doing this - the internet isn't the most reliable thing here.
