Why can't the FA office tell me where the "outside scholarship" is coming from?

My D has an amount listed on her financial aid page under a category called "outside scholarship". I called the FA office to find out where this amount is coming from and they can't tell me. The amount is reflected in their statement as well and it could be something from the School of Nursing, but of course, the person I need to speak with at the SON is off today.

I don't really care where the money came from...I just want to make certain that I can get excited about it!

Can anyone with more experience shed some light on this?

Thank you!

My daughter gets a form that lists her scholarship and then on the bottom there is space to write in other scholarships that are expected. For example, DD gets $$ for her National Merit Scholarship that is paid directly to the university. I don’t know whether that is helpful at all. Could someone have sent in information about a local scholarship?

It seems odd that only one person in the SON has access to the scholaship list. Hope the person is back tomorrow.

All outside scholarships (not from Pitt) are listed as “outside” scholarships. I think it is easier for them to just input the amount from the check and put it under one listing. DS gets the form that list his UHC scholarship but the engineering is not listed and we have to add that as well as his outside scholarship. Perhaps the nursing dept. does it differently, but the engineering scholarship from Pitt will be listed so we know it is from the engineering dept.

Something you might want to watch for is that even if you tell them the money is coming, it is not always subtracted from the amount due. So you pay the whole bill that is shown and when the money comes in after the bill has been paid, the student gets a deposit or a check. I hope that makes sense.

I can’t imagine that Pitt would consider a Nursing Scholarship “outside”…especially since they don’t for other schools.

kef318, is there any chance that your D applied for other scholarships/may have recieved other scholarships from a local/other organization? She may need to ask her counselor or something that might have recommended her without her knowing.

I actually spoke to someone in the FA office who indicated to me that many department scholarships are initially listed as “outside”.

Just received the official award email from the School of Nursing!

Learn a new thing everyday  It is not logical to list a scholarship from any department at Pitt as an outside scholarship (at least to me) :)

Oh good! Problem solved :)

(I agree MTnest, dunno why Pitt makes people go through the pains like this for a departmental scholarship!)
