Should this be more of a direct essay or should it be more creative. right now i feel like im stating directly why i want to go to chicago e.g. the programs and dont really have much creativity

A direct essay would be perfectly fine. Mine was pretty direct.

Mine was direct as well.

Mine was creative. I’d say try to be creative in any UChic essay you do, because that is what they look for. Plus, if you’re unsure about how your other essays are on the creativity scale, then it’d be a good idea to to try it for the Why UChicago essay. Example of a creative essay: Love letter to UChicago (for the Why UChicago? essay). They sent a copy of the essay out because they were so impressed…

But keep in mind you don’t HAVE to write a creative essay, and it won’t keep you out. I’m just saying it can only help with UChicago. If you’re supplemental essay is already super creative, or even your common application one, then you don’t have to. But you should try to be creative in at least one of the essays…

Take AJB’s posts with a grain of salt. Creativity is obviously not the only thing Chicago is looking for; it’s just something they’re able to appreciate. What they’re looking for in the Why Chicago essay is that you know the specific reasons why you want to attend. My Why Chicago essay was perfectly ordinary.

my common app is pretty creative, so i guess ill go more direct

I’d say, be as honest as you can. The more individual and unique your interest in the University of Chicago is, the easier it will be fore them to see if you’ll fit here. What about the University makes you - and only you - want to come here? In that vein, write it in the way that makes sense to you.
