Why College Confidential is not a good place to ask for advice on college admissions

Give it a rest. For nothing more than the time it takes to register and come up with a precious screen name a student or parent can post their statistics and ask for insight. For all that effort they’ll get responses from equally anonymous and preciously named CCers. Do those answers come with a lot of noise? Yes. Are there occasional pearls of wisdom? Yes as well.

Anyone basing their college decisions entirely on what they read on CC deserves all the scorn we can muster, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t valuable insight and direction offered by a lot of posters here. One of the great skills to acquire in life is the ability to separate the wheat from the chaff, CC is as good a place to start learning that as any.

Oh, I also like the “Chance me and I will chance you back” thread titles. It really illustrates my earlier point that, for the most part, the people “chancing” other people have about the same college admissions knowledge base as those people.

CC is a microcosm of internet itself. There is lots of bad information, lots of good information, and lots of anecdotes that may or may not be relevant. It is up to the user to wade through the BS to find good advice.

The CC forum that stands out to me in terms of good advice is Financial Aid. Lots of meat; little fat & bones. It is an outstanding resource with a number of highly knowledgeable posters. Even though the topic concerns college admissions, financial aid needs to be considered in figuring out where to apply and the likelihood of being able to attend when family resources are scarce. Those who fail to take FA into account in the fall are often greatly disappointed in the spring when they find out they can’t afford their dream school.

Advice and “chancing” are different things entirely.

I remember you from the Law School Forum. Anyone even remotely considering pre-law as a major is well… an idiot. Then again, you mentioned might also like to be an MBA economist, or hold a doctorate… You may not be a URM, but you do come from a lower income, immigrant background so that would have factored positively in your admissions. I wouldn’t be as callous as to mock others who don’t share the circumstances of your life. Good for you… bottom half of your class and you got into NYU. I’d have given you no chances for sure myself.

And weren’t you going to get your admissions revoked from Hofstra? 2 D’s and 2 C’s? Or have you just stopped being “scared ****less”? Maybe you should make your rants when you know for sure that you yourself will be attending college.

Have a great life.
