Why Columbia .... Not

You know you can attend only one school right?

I'm getting the impression that you're applying to all those colleges just because of prestige..and to deliberately leave out Columbia and rant about how you hate it is kinda funny, you know

would you give us a little more information if you dont mind?

like which ones do you think are safeties/matches/reaches/super-reaches?
and perhaps your stats would help to understand your situation.
oh and.. what is your top-choice schools?

Why do we even believe him...?

lol..ur obviously weird..no offense..but 1- if u dont like the core curriculum..u dont apply..simple..then obviously columbia isnt the school for u..but nothing is wrong with the core curriculum..your pretty ignorant because the examples you use to portray as a bad school can be used for any school..yale is in a horrible neighborhood..but really if we are talking education..the neighborhood doesnt matter..also.."they acted as if they are HYPS"..whats that supposed to mean?.. hmm so HYPS can act like arrogant bthes..is that what u mean?

another thing..Columbia comes before Harlem..harlem is 125th..columbia is like 116th or somethin..before harlem...get that straight..plus the subway is right outside of Columbia's campus..soo theres no need to even walk..u can be going to columbia forever and be unaware of the streets of Harlem..anways u might be too weak to live in the city anyway..but please if u go do get into Yale..walk in the streets at night outside of the campus by yourself..and tell me how safe u feel..btw the whole idea of an island within an island is stupid because DUHH..its a freaking campus..its like a mini city within a big city..but nyc is right outside of columbia's doors..so it doesnt matter..i believe upenn is in a bad neighborhood too..and hmm..your just a hater..u wouldnt get into columbia anyway..hehe..sorry but i bet ur personality sucks..i might be wrong

I applied to a lot of schools too..hehe..but I got fee waivers baby!..i didnt pay a cent:)!!!

Yea a lot of people have already attacked him for his lack of geographical knowledge regarding harlem and its relation to morningside heights. tsk tsk

I'm certain that your opinions, sempitern, will change all our minds. . . .

Your college list is the most thoughtless I've ever seen, by the way, and it's also the longest I've ever seen

Does this remind you guys of that MadenlineMay girl or something? She was ranting about how Columbia isnt known outside the US and how it is so dangerous and a bunch of other crap that was completely untrue.

Hahaha, madenlinemay is so old school, where in the world is she now? I hope she didn’t get “stabbed”, lol.

I just find this sempitern or whatever his/her name is soooo funny.
Look at that list!!!!!
It's breathtakingly long lol.... how many of those do you think you'll get into sempie?

Either it's a joke or he's frrricking smart.
A guy from my HS (a really annoying and pompous sh!thead) is appyling to all 8 ivies, WUSTL, Stanford, Gtown, NYU and probably a few other ones like Duke...and I was like W-T-F, how is there any similarity between Duke and Columbia, WUSTL and NYU.... Ya know? Apart from the fact that it's got a name.. and most of these schools are like in the top 20 from US news..... I dunno it's pretty stupid... So sempie could really be doing all those schools!

I actually did apply to all of those schools. Thank God to the Common App.
My stats are as follows
4.22 W 3.85 UW
exponential increase in gpa
5.0 this year

Sat: 760 V 680 M
800 World History, 750 Bio, 750 Writing, 720 Math IIC, 710 Spanish, 690 Lit( lol, lowest)

National AP Scholar
last year I took 11 AP exams passed all of them and canceled one, 6 5's
I have taken all of the classes offered at my hs then went to take classes in community college
I could have graduated early but didnt. Will have 30-40 college units by high school graduation date. Took advantage of a loophole in CA which allows any hs student to go to community college for FREE.

Extracurriculuars
Youth And Government Fanatic major leadership
Started Young Dems of my town
Local Hospital "chairman of volunteer services" in charge of coordinating all the activities of the department
Football
Violin(section leader in orchestra)
Immunopathology research at UCLA

Summers
college classes + volunteering in Armenia teaching english

As to my selection of colleges. This summer I visited a great deal of the ones in the Northeast. I am applying to Duke because I love the atmosphere. All of the other schools I'm applying to because they've been sending me pamplets for a Loooooooooong time. The UC's are sort of obligatory for students from my High School so I applied to them.

btw-got into tulane, full ride so even if I get rejected from the rest of the colleges at least I wont be an orphan

wow..research at ucla
nice ECs but personally i couldn't see how first year community college courses could be different from APs

Just a warning, as someone who has attended more than one of those schools on your list - many of those schools will not take college credits that were obtained at another college prior to matriculation. I had 16 credits from Harvard, which I got while in high school, before matriculating at Columbia. Yale, Princeton, and Dartmouth have similar rules, as does Stanford. Harvard likely does as well. Just something to be aware of. Also most of these schools will not give credit for most AP scores below a 5. Another thing to take into consideration. I had the opportunity to attend University of Florida as a first semester junior with all of my credits obtained during highschool and with APs. I eventually decided against it, but you may not wish to...

All of the other schools I'm applying to because they've been sending me pamplets for a Loooooooooong time.

They all send materials to everybody. It doesn't make you any special.

BTW, did you take the AP Spanish Lang? What did you get on it?

yup got a 3 ugh

abt what u wrote earlier ...

a) tour guides have nothing to do with the quality of the school. my harvard tour guide had a severe speech impediment, but that doesn't affect the college overall.
b) um, "haught admissions officers" ... how is this even relevant? you won't take classes with them. the student body isn't haughty.

also, is there anything that ur list of big-name schools have in common?

swarthmore ... ucla ... wash u ...

additionally, yale's location in new haven is utterly disgusting. i would take harlem any day. at least in NYC you have places to go and have fun (while new haven is utterly limited in comparison) --as there's a subway system that gets you around easily. not that you may still remember, as you don't even know NYC's geography anymore.

and why are you complaining about the core curriculum? harvard and yale also have one.

i think you're the arrogant one, not columbia.

sexydesi -- i have to agree. i don't see anything in the personality department for this hater.

hahah dude, you've gotta think about some of the stuff that you said.

you call Columbia an island within an island like it's a bad thing. It is the perfect mix. You have your small island, giving you a taste of a nice, somewhat suburban comfortable environment, and then you have your greater island, Manhattan, outside of Columbia.

id take that anyday over a mediocre Yale island surrounded by a barren wasteland of ****

suck it Yale, suck it.

correction to some previous posts: Yale and Hahvahd have distribution requirements not a core curriculum.

Also, the intellectual nature of the Yale campus and its students far outweighs the allure of NYC. I just don't get it. What is so beautiful about NYC, but then again, I never did like the big apple. Its good for day trips but otherwise... ugh. And Yale or Pton are the perfect distance away for a day trip.

The reason that I called the adcoms and the students arrogant is that they act like Hahvahd but withouth the stats to back it up. I believe the HYPS students don't need to brag about their school becuase everyone already knows they are good. However, I always got the feeling that the people were trying for a hard sell. That is, trying to prove themselves. They seemed insecure to me.

In addition, while visiting colleges this summer I realized that the quality of the student body was the most important asset. After all, anyone can buy books and have fundraising drives for new buildings but it is the students at the college that set it apart. When I visited Columbia, I just didn't see that spark.

Anyway, that's my own personal opinion. People are free to disagree.

The rest of the schools I'm applying to are either because they're safeties (Tulane) or because there is a specific aspect of the campus which attracts me. For example, I'm applying to Rice because of the Baylor program, and Swarthmore for its intellectual prowess minus the snobbishness found at many other schools. So the above list is not just random.

i visited yale and hated it. they were trying to act like harvard/oxford/cambridge.
