Why did I get a letter from a college saying my application is currently incomplete?

I just got letter from a college I applied to and on it, it said, "Your application for admissions is currently incomplete, the following information is needed: Official high school transcript and SAT or ACT scores.

Was it really necessary for the college to send this letter? Can't they be patient? I sent the transcript a few days after I submitted the online application and I'm not going to send SAT scores to them until after I take the December SAT's because the school does NOT have a SAT send score deadline. Do all colleges expect the applicant to submit their application, send scores, and make sure the transcript is received ALL in one day? Can't they be patient?

Colleges just want to keep applicants on track. Some applicants may not realize they are missing something. Just relax, and send in your SAT score after you get it.

They’re trying to do you a favor.

I assume you did not apply early action or decision in which case you would be late with submissions.

I am guessing you might be talking about a rolling admissions school, which makes admissions decisions as applications are received. If so, a reminder such as that may go out not too long after the application is sent because the sooner they receive all info the sooner they can review the file and make a decision; moreover if it is a rolling admission college they are also telling you in a subtle way that waiting to send stuff can be to your disadvantage because if programs fill via rolling admission and they don’t get your stuff until later, you may not get the program you want.

If it is not a rolling admission college and you did not do EA or ED then I would agree it seems somewhat silly for them to send the reminder before the application deadline has even occurred but it is something that may actually help some who forgot to send something they were going to.

You would really appreciate that letter if you had sent those materials long ago and didn’t know they hadn’t been received.
