<p>State universities applications were up because of the economy. They are cheap compared to private schools. Consequently standards at state universities probably increased. Admissions standards at some private schools (not the top ones with fabulous financial aid) may have decreased.</p>

<p>When asked if they favor OOS students, the admissions folks at Binghamton will tell you straight out that they are interested in increasing diversity and visibility.</p>
<p>By the way Kayf, I noticed that New Paltz’s admission rate is down to 38% for last year, which was shocking, and I’m told it will likely be lower even still this year. I absolutely did not know that.</p>
