Why did SO MANY people at my school get accepted?

Seriously, Berkeley admits students at my school with 1500 and 1600 SATs, and 3.6-3.7 GPAs and stuff, and then reject CC kids with 2200+ SATs and perfect grades. What's wrong with Berkeley? I mean what criteria does it use to admit students.

Good thing I don't have to go to Berkeley with a bunch of my under-achieving classmates. I'm happy I got into Stanford and Yale.

BTW, Berkeley was my dream school for a while, and Stanford and Yale are totally unexpected.

Berkeley is fairly open about what it looks for in its prospective freshmen.

http://www.berkeley.edu/news/media/releases/2005/05/16_hout.shtml

It's hard for me to believe that many students from one high school with 1500-1600 SATs (out of 2400) would get in Berkeley, but if you also unexpectedly get into Stanford and Yale then maybe you just happen to attend a very good high school that is good at getting its students into good colleges.

Trolling perhaps??

906 posts. Unlikely.

More than 10 were accepted from my school (class total: 120ish). But most of them are from the smart classes so it's understandable that they got in.

I haven't seen many (if any) 1500-1600's posted on the decision thread...

Would love to see their stats. What HS is this?

Your previous high school alums probably did really well at Cal, making admissions more favorable for your school. The same thing happens at my school, because we send so many students to Cal that do really well.

Yes its always lovely that over 1% of every entering class comes from my high school.

My high school is in the east bay, really close to Berkeley, so I guess that is why we are given preference. Maybe perhaps. Alot of people do go to Berkeley each year from my school. I'm sure they'll do well there, but its just that it seems Berkeley varies so much in its student body at least stats-wise.

I'm not sure about the students at my school's stats, but they're people you would say that Berkeley is a reach for, and alot of them got in. Only like 2 had above a 1800 though for sure, but not above 1900. 1900 is actually a very impressive score at my school.

Maybe I'm being hypocritical when I'm saying this, because I got into Stanford and Yale with subpar stats.

I read on CC that UCB had over 5,000 applicants with perfect SATs...it is no easy feat to be accepted to Cal

Yeah, but that's because everyone just checks the box for Berkley when they want to apply to Santa Cruz or Riverside, hoping they might hit it lucky. Not to disparage Berkeley or anything, but those students probably got accepted elsewhere and decided to attend the other school.

I use to live in an area around Berkeley, and they would accept students with very low scores. 1000 on the SAT (old scale). I think part of it has to do with opportunity and such, since location is considered in admissions.

Golden Bear: Dude, 1% of the entering class (9,836) is 98. Your school sends 100 kids to Berkeley every year?

And PageL, no need to be cocky. You too have low-ass stats but luckily got into Yale. Be humble.

Hey, you forgot about Stanford. Its Yale AND Stanford, thank you very much.

Just goes to show you that admissions at elite colleges aren't just about numbers.

About 10000 students are accepted to Cal's reshman class and around 90-100 are from my high school. Normally about 50 actually choose to enroll at Cal, which is about 1% of the matriculating freshman class of about 4800-5000.

Wow, that's pretty impressive, Golden Bear. I assume you are attending Berkeley this fall?

Going to be my 2nd Year at Cal, though I do have Junior Standing.
