Why did you choose the school you're going to?

Or, for not seniors (aka: lame-o), why are you choosing the top 5 to apply to?

I always hear "MIT!" why? "Because it's MIT!!!"

No, seriously, why?

I’m going to UC Berkeley because it has a top notch EECS program and very strong engineering department.

It is also much cheaper than colleges on the east coast so I can afford it without parental assistance.

I was fairly interested in MIT, but I definitely like Cal’s environment and engineering department.

My top 5?

MIT
Harvard
Stanford
Carnegie Mellon
Princeton

I’m choosing these 5 because after comparing their respective computer science and computer engineering programs, I’m very impressed,

I chose my top five based solely on where I think I’ll be happiest and most enjoy those four years of my life. It’s not that academics aren’t important to me, just that I believe you can get a good education (practically) anywhere.

"I always hear “MIT!” why? “Because it’s MIT!!!”

I can’t stand this. I go to boarding school, so there’s so much focus on going to name-brand colleges. My friend is obsessed with going to an Ivy (she won’t get into any of them, but that’s another story), and when I asked her why she wanted to go to one, she literally couldn’t give me any reason.

But like, not the environment or what it might mean to you? anything else besides ranking?

Like, okay, I’m choosing Carnegie Mellon but it was at first just because of how quirky it sounded, the bagpipe scholarship was how I first heard of it when searching “weird scholarships”. Then it was a goal because of the robotics and theater at the same damn place and I’m a huge theater dork and into robotics. What about the computer/engineering? Any interesting research you heard of? Like [YouTube - Robots that walk on water](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBU9ptF-_sU) when I heard of that I thought it’d be cool to do something similar while there in research. Also the play Pippin was first premiered there and the school just kept coming up in whatever I was interested in. No one I know actually recognizes the name besides some counselor so I didn’t do it for bragging. Also I was looking at UT but it’s just an incredibly fun school and Austin is great yet I don’t like the size. Or RPI because of how nerdy everyone was, I mean, comic books and all that oddness, goofy dorks sort of, and then the theater club was small but very close-knit.

I guess I’m just wondering if anything went into your college decisions besides ranking/prestige.

Waseda University: Great acting/film program. Probably one of the best in Japan (where it’s located). It’s also in TOKYO :D

Meiji University and Temple University in Japan: Located in Japan, and I can major in Japanese… in Tokyo.

Dartmouth: Great Japanese program.

Middlebury College: Great Japanese and Creative Writing programs.

Well, it looks like I’m going to Harvard. I “chose” it because my parents made me. They can save a ton of money.I think it patently unfair and wish I had been rejected.

I’m going to Indiana University because it’s highly reputable with video-journalism and business, is close to and well regarded in Chicago (where I plan to live), has one of the nation’s biggest greek systems, has the most support services of everywhere I visited, is in a cool town and has a big, active (and pretty) campus, isn’t THAT expensive compared to other state schools, anddddd because it’s a huge party school and promises to be a hell of a good time.

^ Millancad I can’t tell if you’re kidding?

@Millancad, that sucks. I never want my parents to force me to go to a college that’s not my choosing. If that happens, I’ll gladly disobey.

I chose my school because I’m dirt poor and I can’t afford to go anywhere else.

“Well, it looks like I’m going to Harvard. I “chose” it because my parents made me. They can save a ton of money.I think it patently unfair and wish I had been rejected.”

Seriously? That sucks.

@ Millancad: Same thing happened to my cousin…even though they can afford it w/o any loans (very rich) but her mom forced her to go to Princeton  B/c of the prestige and other perks that come along with it apparently… (she got into 12 schools).

I will be attending the University of Iowa and technically it’s my dream school. Everything I was looking for plus more in a university and college town is offered at the University of Iowa. Even better knowing that at least for my freshmen year I will not be going into debt. I couldn’t ask for more, very excited.

I wish somebody would force me to go to an Ivy.
