He is saying the sheer number of poor white people is greater than poor minorities, not the percentages. While he is correct, I am kind of unsure of his point. Maybe he is trying to say that whites suffer from poverty too. The poverty rate of asians is almost the same as that of whites. Facts and figures on poverty in the United States | By Sarah Kraybill | Grist | Counter Culture | 13 Feb 2006

a lowly state university (UF) where the intelligence level is subpar compared to that of higher institutions...it is all my family and I can afford and my future looks very bleak...I guess I will be eating scraps for dinner the rest of my life...I am not worthy

I acknowledge that blacks and hispanics have a higher rate of poverty than whites, but shouldn't affirmative action thus look at standard of living, and not race?

I'm willing to bet that I grew up in a poorer home that most minority blacks and hispanics. Single mom with 7 kids. Macaroni everyday, paid my own school fees, etc. And I'm still in University, although have to take out student loans and hold a job.

^^umm this is not an AA thread so dont make it one...thanks

rl.hill, if no condescension is intended what is the point of knowing...is there something more you can gather by knowing which college they atten? pure curiosity?

just curious... i mean it's not like anyone knows about my school so I have no reason to be condescending

Affirmative action was mentioned way before my post. And I'll post whatever I want, but thanks, Mr. mod.

I would respond to Russell's point, but i'd be asking for a flame war...

condescension? like clouds? isn't that like that stuff that like forms on the outside of glasses on like a hot day?

condensation

lol, I don't flame. The only time I get irritated over the internet is when someone tells me not to post something (like the other guy just did), or when I'm arguing with someone that writes mini essays for replies.

rl.hill,

your location says Williams College? Do you not attend there?

Russell,

your right Affirmative action was mentioned, and then quickly passed over b.c it is not an AA thread...plus we all know your lying..about being poor...last i remember in the "how to dress well" forum you were saying you wear brands like f.c.u.k., rvca, diesel, obey. Diesel is really expensive and so is Obey and especially ****...more for upper middle class than someone who claims to eat macaroni everyday...

Uh, first of all, ixjunitxi, I work, take out loans, and receive a lot of scholarship money. If you don't think that's enough to buy some nice clothes, then you're just completely ignorant. I was referring mostly to my childhood, before I was able to work. I'm sure I could provide some sort of documentation as to how poor my family is (like my mom's tax return), if you really care that much.

Also, the only diesel shirt I even have was given to me. I have 1 obey shirt, and I have a lot of f.cuk shirts because I can find them on clearance for $20. Since when is f.cuk expensive?

my bad man....wasnt trying to offend you

but if you buy anthing on clearance its not going to be expensive...but french connection is def pretty up there.. to pay 60-70 dollars for a tshirt is not cheap...no matter where your from.

fcusbuymail - shirts

OH oopsy looks like my stait edookayshun phaildid mi wunce uhgen!

You can be poor and buy designer clothes...it's just not a smart way to manage money

While I can't speak for all minority groups, Russell, I think black poverty and white poverty are different beasts altogether. Black poverty is mostly the product of systematic discrimination, while white poverty is not.

I'm still laughing at post # 253. CM, you are a funny man. agreed on CM's second point. sorry, Russell.

EDIT: I...don't think my first point is entirely correct. I think poverty is a complicated issue that crosses racial lines with too much regularity to isolate into "black" and "white" groups. So how about we all just rally against The Man?

White poverty is due to ignorance. It is so easy for white people to get money. I don't even wanna touch it.

I agree, rl.hill, I just thought that people in this thread were justifying AA by quoting poverty rates. And if it's such an influential factor, then I think AA should be directed to an entirely different social group altogether. And I agree with the other guy that this thread wasn't intended for an AA discussion, so I'll just leave it at that. I just wanted to reply to the point made on the previous page about it.

And yeah, chamilitary, it usually is (it was in my mom's case). But you can't blame someone's kids for the mistakes that their parents made.

I think most admissions officers take into account poverty, regardless of race.

My Uni's admissions is strictly academic and racial. Although there are quite a few bursaries and scholarships available only to the poor.

I've never heard of a Uni taking income into consideration for admissions.

we could debate this, but then we'd need to know what college you attend :)

no seriously, if you go to a college where adcoms split hairs, then there's a good chance they consider the effects of poverty in academic success.
