Why do college students like alcohol?

^^ Blasphemy.

The people who focus solely on education probably get the complete college experience.

i work in an alcohol clinic.

1 12 oz beer = 1.25 ounces of hard liquor = 1 6 ounce glass of wine.

that is a fact. scientifically proven and everything for all you serious people.

the difference is, you're probably gonna drink more shots of liquor per hour than beers, which is why it seems like drinking vodka gets you drunker.

^^ yep yep. wierd how science works that way lol.

i agree with the notion that drinking alcohol does not make you a worse or less moral person. i just don't agree with people thinking that people who don't drink are NOT fun people. saying one is just as bad as the other.
in short
to non-drinkers: not drinking does not make you a better person
to drinkers: drinking does not make you a more enjoyable person

life is good when we all respect each other's decisions :)

CC, being the nerdery that it is, seems to be too full of students who don't understand that the education you receive in college takes place both inside and outside of the classroom. Drinking and socializing is part of that education, not an obstacle to it or a pitstop on the way to some greater goal. There's a common misconception among CC parents and students that drinking means drinking until you pass out, puke on yourself and get raped. Not true! Most nights out on the town result in much comraderie, tomfoolery and events/scenarios that result in stories that will be told for decades.

true cavalier, but this same camaraderie can be achieved through sober interaction as well as when the people are a little under the influence. it is so true that college is not solely about the classroom. social life is one of the biggest things that i've been looking at colleges! :D what is the point of spending the next 4 years of your life without living lol. friends and good times are what life is about.

You tried answering my question by restating it. Why do you like alcohol=Why do you find alcohol appealing?

Alcohol, to me, doesn't taste good.

Also, why does being drunk feel good to you?
I restated it so maybe you and others would realize how stupid the question was, that wasn't an answer. In case you couldn't tell, the next paragraph was my answer.

To most people, alcohol doesn't taste good initially just like many things. I can remember my little sister making faces when she first tried soda, it didn't taste good to her. Find the right type of alcohol, rather it be liquor or beer, and it'll taste good. People who don't like the taste of alcohol seem to loves drinks like smirnoff.

Have you been drunk? Laughing at stupid things, maybe dizzy, feel like dancing, etc. It's hard to describe the feeling, it's just good.

I have a related question: why do people who do drink always find it necessary to attack the people who say they don't?

A previous poster equated liking to drink with liking to do other "fun" activities, like paying video games. Some people enjoy video games, and some do not. Yet I've never encountered a situation where person A asks person B if he likes to play video games, person B replies that he does not, and person A goes off on a rant about well why the hell not, what's wrong with you, are you are religious fanatic? do you think you're better than me? why don't you just TRY it, come with me and I'll MAKE you try it! This will happen, however, if they are talking about drinking. Every person that I have ever told that I don't drink as reacted this way, in varying degrees of extremity. I've never understood why they do this...it's almost like they're offended at the idea.

^Everyone, eh?

jesus drank wine.

He also said to water, "Turn into WINE, B*TCH!"

this is just from my personal experience. drinking makes me depressed (which isn't weird since it is a depressant). naturally when i'm myself and i'm in a good environment with friends i'll have as much fun as the next guy and just do random things and fool around, etc. but when i drink i get down. i start thinking more than i normally do. i become even more conscious of my surroundings. i don't like the taste of it, nor the feeling. even when i'm drunk i've had friends tell me "man you look like your embarrassed of us or like you're not having fun" and it's because of the alcohol. i guess for me alcohol is like ehhh. i don't see the big deal in it. if people enjoy it good for them. and if people don't enjoy it, good for them too. it doesn't make you any better or worse for liking it or not liking it.

then don't drink

then don't drink
i didn't ask for advice on whether i should drink or not.

I don't see the appeal of drinking at all. I am perfectly capable of having a fun time with my friends without any alcohol whatsoever. I hear stories of people that go to parties and get drunk, and all I can think of is how incredibly stupid they sound. Why waste your life away by having "fun" when you can't even remember everything you did, or weren't in your right state of mind. That doesn't sound like fun to me. (And no, I'm not some religious nut-job.) I just think plenty of fun can be had without going to parties and drinking or being around drunks.

Don't knock it until you've tried it. That said, it's obviously not THE fun thing to do with your free time.

While you shouldn't rely on booze to have a good time, its definately something which is worth experiencing. If you try it and don't like it, thats fine. You shouldn't knock people who drink, just as people who drink shouldn't knock those who don't.

Regardless, college is the time to "experiment" with anything and everything, so I figure, if you're going to make an ass of yourself drinking, theres no better time than the present.

I restated it so maybe you and others would realize how stupid the question was, that wasn't an answer. In case you couldn't tell, the next paragraph was my answer.

That is incorrect. In trying to give a general answer, you said the following:
This question is just like asking people, "Why do you smoke? Why do you play videogames?". Why do you think they do? B/c it's appealing to them.
Along the same lines, you tried answering the question "Why do you think people drink alcohol?" with "B/c it's appealing to them." But my point is that asking why people drink alcohol is asking why those people find alcohol appealing. You used circular reasoning.

Also, questions can't be stupid.

^ thats right. Questions arn't stupid, only people who ask them are.

I drink to irritate stuck up non-drinkers like the OP.

Good on you ArchHopeful

I think people are mixing up 2 distinct kinds of drinking
1. 47 beers(0.5l glasses) in one night. No **** really. I went to elementary school with this guy. He already has Korsakov syndrome and uncountable liver problems and drinks more beer than water. He isn't going to live for much longer if he keeps this up.
2. Drinking a few beers with buddies, that could very well turn into a little bit more than a few beers, but still very reserved social drinking.

I think i'm going to go all out on a number 1 just to spite those anti-drinkers. hehe no way i can't even make 2/3 for the life of me. God... i'm still in shock from when i heard that. He's just 16, i'm like 3 months older than him.. blech
