Why do college students like alcohol?

try hefeweisen (sp?) it's gotta sweet after taste. the beer you've been getting (prolly cheap/frat) is disgusting and feel yah, but when you drink some smooth, good beer, you'll be able to tolerate that natty ice or ks. STAY AWAY FROM STEEL RESERVE, THAT IS HORSE URINE

but I am a bit that the likes of tsdad are so extremely against alcohol.

I am not against alcohol. I do drink, on weekends, but only wine. I do not like the taste of hard liquor or beer.

Unlike many of the contributors I do not drink to get drunk. That's what I'm opposed to. Many of you cannot seem to make that distinction. Where's the thrill in waking-up in someone else's bed; wondering if you're going to get a STD; feeling like your head is going to explode; and unable to find your shoes? Maybe that's your idea of fun, but it's not mine.

an awkward morning beats a boring night :)

I find it interesting that most of the parents that are so against underage drinking didn't have to deal with the situation that most college students now do. The drinking age used to be 18 when my parents were in college and they could legally drink throughout their college careers, I expect the same to be true of most parents so against underage drinking.

It was 21 when I was in college.

right, because only shallow people drink right? not to mention every president (except this one,...maybe that explains something), ernest hemingway, f. scott fitzgerald, jean-paul satre, albert camus, che guevara, kirkegaurd, bob marley, john lennon,....and jesus.
they must all be shallow

Don't you have a Che Gueverra rally to attend to? Stop your Bush-bashing for one second and focus on the topic of the thread. You're a tool.

I do think that a lot of kids have watched Animal House too many times and think that's what college is supposed to be like. I drink, I have fun, etc. but I do think that uncontrolled hedonism starts to back fire after a while. It really gets bad later in life...go to any AA meeting and you'll talk to guys who were at top schools and managed to drink themselves into a gutter during adulthood. At 18, a lot of kids lack any foresight. I certainly did. I'm almost 22, and I've learned the hardway about the consequences of non-stop drinking/drugging. It doesn't happen overnight. But a sizeable minority of college students will deal with very serious consequences as a result of alcoholism. Also, to those who defend alcoholism by name dropping Hemingway and Sarte-you're mssing the point. Alcoholism has nothing to do with intelligence. Brilliant people are often suicidally depressed/clinical alcoholics.

Alcohol sure made his life wonderful.

Alcohol for me is a wonderful drug. It relaxes me, reduces my inhibitions and makes social excursions more lively and enjoyable. If I drink water during the night I never get a hangover, and I am able to moderate my intake and maintain a 4.0 GPA. It's all about who you are and what you can handle. Some of us will turn into alcoholics, some of us will not, there's no way to tell. This paternalistic BS that some above posters are spouting serves no real purpose except to justify the endeavors of more straight edges in their moral superiority.

So I assume you have as much unprotected sex as possible; use needles you pick up on the street; don't wear seat belts; and smoke several packs of cigarettes a day because after all "there's no way to tell."

Moral superiority has nothing to do with it. It's about not being stupid.

I have an idea: How about both sides stop making value judgments?

Reading arguments on message boards always makes me laugh.

I'm drunk most every friday night and/or saturday night, and sometimes I drink a beer or two with my lunch during the week. I've never had unprotected sex, let alone sex at all. I don't smoke, nor do any other drugs and I always wear my seat belt. I make good grades and am very involved in athletics.

If it's about not being stupid, then why are you being stupid and making stereotypical assumptions? I realize you are trying to make a point, but there are "smart blondes" out there too.

Hee hee, pwned.

Lol at you getting so serious about the matter. If you like drinking cool, if you don't, thats cool too, but you don't have to blast everyone who drinks. Visa Versa.

its kinda fun, nothing more nothing less.

Is that the same thing as "less is more"?

Tsdad you are totally missing my point. There are risks in things we do everyday. It's all about risks vs. benefits, and honestly I judged my risk for alcoholism to not justify my abstinence from all the benefits drinking entails. Lucky for me I was right.

What the hell is a parent doing on a college life forum anyway. Your opinion, honestly, is a little dated and too paternalistic for these forums. We should probably go back to prohibition because obviously with all the evils of alcoholism people should not be allowed to even make the choice of whether they drink or not.

Man, its a good thing they don't get all upset at us over at the Parents Cafe when us college students post there.

Ah, "tolerance" at its finest...

I am not talking about abstinence. I am talking about people who drink to get drunk, which is what people in this thread are talking about.

Getting drunk is not a reasonable risk. It's stupid and the kind of "I'm young, I'm invulnerable, and nothing bad can happen to me," behavior that destroys young people and devastates their parents.

Getting drunk in a safe environment with your friends is not all that risky despite what you think.
