Why do colleges recalculate GPA as 90+ = 4.0?

OP, you’re in really good standing. Don’t worry. Anyone else agree?

someone has not answered my question in page 1.

blueiguana, they won’t know I have a B+ (what would be an A- at other schools) because my school doesn’t offer pluses or minuses. They don’t know whether I got an 84.5 or a 92.4. But it’s not a huge deal, I was just curious. Thanks for your hlep.

airfreshner … most colleges are only interested in the A/B/C grade … so if your transcipt shows a B+ then most colleges will not have an interest in the underlying percentage

(ps - if your school report said 89-91 is a B+ then it is a B+ … what other schools do does not matter … that is one of the reasons colleges want the school summary info which explains the schools grading policy) (in addition, a “tougher” grading scale, for example 92-100 is an A instead of 90-100, does not necessarily equat to a tougher grading scale … what matters is what % of students get As … it well could be the case that a class with a 90-100 A scale course has many more As than a class with a 92-100 A scale; it all depends on how tough the course is and how many A were given)

Glasses-
It is difficult. We have +'s, but not -'s, with the exception of no A+'s. When you are getting down to that detail, really the college wants to know, what were your grades, what does that grade equal at your school, what your rank is, and grade distribution. 3togo makes a very good point. There was a good deal of celebration when the grading scale was moved from 7 to 10 pt. The students quickly realized no one was getting easier A’s, the teachers were simply making their tests and assignments ‘harder’ to reflect what they felt was A effort. Not much changed. It shows as much on the transcript.

any more thoughts about my situation?

stoompy - what is on your transcript a %grade or an A-F grade with +/-?

anyway, every school does it differently, but most of them do something, so that they can compare apples to apples.

It sounds like you have excellent grades, which means they will be looking at other parts of your application.

On our school transcript, we have a scale that says 90-100 = A, 80-89 = B, etc.
Then for say… English 1 Honors we will have Semester 1 - 93 Semester 2 - 95 Final Average - 94.

I’ve had all 90+ as final averages, but an 89 unweighted one time as a semester average. But I think that’s rather negligible…

Yes, stop worrying. Worry about your essay instead. It will be much more important.
