Why do parents use "S" and "D"?

... instead of "son" and "daughter"?

Just an abbreviation, since we use the words so often! You’ll also see DS and DD a lot.

What are DS and DD?

“Dear Son” and “Dear Daughter” (unless you want them to mean something else at times).

Also, “D1” means oldest daughter, "D2’ next oldest daughter, etc. Easier than writing out “My oldest daughter…”

On a related note, does anyone know why people are now favoring the term “kiddos” instead of “kids”? I have noticed this more in real life than on CC. In any case, it doesn’t make sense, since it is a longer word than “kids” and thus not an efficient shorthand like D and S (and HYPSM:)). I had wanted to ask this on Facebook but I would have risked offending half of my friends.

I think it’s just one of those things…something that catches on because people like to say stuff. Like how people will say both “bud” and “buddy” for people same for “kid(s)” ad “kiddo”. Who knows, the more I think about it, the more I don’t have an answer…ha.
