Why do people ask people to " Chance me " ?

Please explain why student ask random people to chance them . It seems to be the most common kind of thread starter - are posters hoping an alumni will spot their post and do a mini assessment ? I am genuinely interested why people ask for chances ,especially to elite schools . Thank you for solving this question for me .

Chance me ; )

HAHA . I really am asking this in a sincere voice ! Chance you as what ?

Applicants are nervous and are looking for reassurement. Not that most of the responders are qualified to assess chances.

The most bizarre posts are the ones that say “Chance me and I’ll chance back”–if you can’t make a good assessment of your own situation, why would anyone trust you for an assessment of theirs? I wish the mods would banish all the “chance me” threads to the “Chances” board so the chancing folks can waste their time in one place.

A single 33,000 Thread ‘Chances’ Forum? Oh my.

MommaJ…I am in so agreement!!!

reassurement? reassurance? If this was an SAT vocab word, which would be right?
oops, wrong thread ;)

I think that these kids are so stressed out by the highly competitive college app process for Top 50 schools that they’re hoping for some kind of “warm fuzzy” to soothe them during the next year while they wait.

What’s funny is that it’s mostly other kids answering these “chance me” threads and they don’t have any more insight than the kid who asks. Since those top schools use holistic methods…twenty kids from the NE will get rejected with better scores than one kid with lower scores from some unusual state.

It would be one thing if the school’s Adcoms were answering, but to hear from other students or even alumni who may not know their alma mater’s current hiring trends isn’t going to yield much.

Maybe the entire college app process needs to be done by about Jan 1st.

Although some might want to brag about their stats, my guess is that most of them are desperately insecure and very hung up on prestige. Because they’re 17-18 and don’t know anything yet.

mom2collegekids - sounds like you are saying the average student from the NE is more qualified than the average kid from some “unusual” state. I’m now in a state of confusion. Can you fill me in? Thanks.

i wonder the same thing i think its because people like to boast about what they have for grades

I love these “why chance " threads”…

NO…

It’s just that I was talking about Top 50 schools…which many are found in the densely populated NE…and those schools just get BOMBARDED with a gazillion apps from NE students…and those NE schools may not get many apps from kids in the lesser populated and more rural states.

NOT talking about “average” kids at all. Talking about top stats kids applying to Top 50 schools. Some NE kids with great stats may get rejected just so that they have adequate representation from all 50 states.

This is just my opinion, but I think a 2250 SAT Val with all A’s from North Dakota has a better chance at Harvard than a 2300 SAT Val with all A’s from the NE…(assuming similar ECs, hooks, essays, LORs, etc).

I agree with MommaJ about the chancing back.

I’ve done one “Chance Me!” thread, and I did it because I wanted suggestions for improvement. These people aren’t admissions counselors, and even if they were, my essays and teacher recommendations aren’t listed, so I wouldn’t be able to get a guaranteed chance, anyway. My fellow CC’ers tend to be more knowledgable about the college admissions process overall and about specific schools, so they can provide insight I wouldn’t otherwise have. I might think I’m the perfect candidate, but someone with fresh eyes might be able to see my ECs are too scattered, or my SAT2 might be high enough for XYZ school, but I might want to reconsider retaking it for ABC school. They can also look at my list of schools with fresh eyes and say, based on my stats, I need more safeties or matches, and they could go as far as to suggest the perfect match for me.

I think it gets ridiculous when people make huge decisions based on these threads. I would never not apply to a school because an anonymous user says I don’t have a chance. I also wouldn’t change my entire “package” or “identity,” so to speak, because someone says ABC school wants me to.

Based on the provided information, I said no to this poster.

"Applicants are nervous and are looking for reassurement. Not that most of the responders are qualified to assess chances. " - exactly.

The Mods won’t ban chance threads because they drive up viewership which increases add revenue.

Why do people ask?

*Many are foreigners
*Many are very proud of their accomplishments
*Many are nervous/insecure
*Many want (more) input b/c they don’t get it at home or school
*These are 16-17 yo kids, facing an important crossroad in their life
*Many lie about their stats and ask themselves “what if?”
*Some kids worry if an SAT 2300 is enough, esp. if their friends get 2400
*Some kids/parents are obsessed about getting into a prestigious college
*For some, getting in is their only hope for their future
*Some want to get feedback on their college list
*Some just need reassurance
*I’ve noticed a preponderance of kids of certain nationalities ask, but this may be b/c these kids are more comfortable sharing online or these kids are focused on stats (scores/gpa/# of hours in an EC).

Did I miss any other reasons? I kinda find it heartbreaking, like the one in coolweather’s post.

OK - I do get your point mom2college kids and my opinion is that does happen in the name of diversity. But, I would refrain from calling less populated states, unusual states.

*But, I would refrain from calling less populated states, unusual states. *

LOL…when I used the word “unusual” - I didn’t mean unusual as in weird or anything negative. I meant it as in a state that doesn’t **usually **bombard those schools with applicants (like NE, Mid-Atlantic and Calif states do).

I meant it in in terms of an Adcom saying…“We don’t **usually **get thousands of apps from that state.”
