I hear people call Duke a school of ******bags all the time. Where does this generalization come from? Does it have any validity?

Haters gonna hate.

What do you care what they think?..It’s a good school regardless of what others say. Nice weather, good sports, top academics. Everyone is entitled to their opinion though.

That’s odd. Wherever i go, I hear millions of ordinary Americans express the unsolicited opinion that Phillips Academy is a rat-infested s*#thole full of dim-witted physically repulsive oafs with nothing better to do than post childish comments about colleges that they have no chance in hell of getting into. Why do you think so many sensible people have reached that conclusion?

GQ Magazine ranks us at the 2nd ******bag college in the nation. We’re not number #1 because they’re tired of seeing us as #1. =P

Are you kidding me? I asked a simple question about several rumors that I have heard, and you respond with this? What the hell is wrong with you?

^^^Does that answer your question? DavidWatts exemplifies the Dookie.

Guys…David Watts is just pointing out that most rumors have no validity to them whatsoever.

Look, CBatch, if you think Duke is full of ******bags based on what a few of your friends have told you, fine, believe it. But what you should do instead is visit Duke and get a feel of the school’s environment yourself instead of asking a pointed question on a forum full of duke students.

A satirist? DavidWatts was clearly being facetious to portray the ridiculousness of such generalizations. CBatch - I think you misinterpreted the purpose of the post.

To answer the OP, small private elite schools that do well in football and/or basketball are often portrayed in such a manner. At least, that’s my theory. Like Notre Dame for football…just not as much recently since their football hasn’t been a national power lately. USC gets the same treatment. Having a more prominent Greek system also adds to the perception. It has little to no basis in reality. Visit and you’ll see that Duke attracts a wide array of individuals - from the nerdy bookwarm to the crazy partier and everything in between.

Coming from an outsider, I’ve met tons of Dukies and pretty much every single one has been friendly, polite and cordial. Not one has come off as arrogant in the least.

I will say though, that after going to the UNC/Duke game at Cameron Indoor last year, the Cameron Crazies come off as complete doooooochebags. But, that’s their job, they are supposed to be jerks.

Humans are humans everywhere. They are all the same. As you go through life, you will come to understand this. I go to Duke. I’ve been to UNC, Harvard, American, Georgetown, JHU, and Yale for extended periods of time. Personality-wise, they are the same everywhere. Trust me.

So yes, Cuse is right. He is full of wisdom. Like me.

YEY

@Cuse0507: But it is the Duke-UNC game… the Cameron Crazies of course are going to get fired up :)

@ OP: I transferred into Duke this year for program reasons (even though I wanted to go back to my old school after I heard I got acceptance into Duke, Duke also had a very strong program in my major that was quite limited at my previous school). I had the same impression of Duke too before coming here. As a Duke student, I can tell you those people exist here, but the majority of people here are polite and friendly. To be honest, I view it as entertaining more so than anything else. I think it is pretty cool that Duke has such a diverse student body in terms of personalities… no student body would be diverse without the dbags They are everywhere.

Nickkk wattup brah.

Okay, now picture the above spoken by someone with a popped collar, dressy sandals and way too much product in his hair. To me, it’s d****ey - it you don’t think so, God bless you, you’ll love Duke.

^ Amen! Spoken like a true narrow minded hater. Good to know you guys are still alive and well in this world.

Who’s hating? One mans d-bag is another man’s brah.

or you know…could just be a nice guy. But then again, I get the feeling you’d treat them like how Juan Williams would treat Muslims on a plane.

@ danstearns: I actually know fantasyspirit91 quite well in real life… he is actually one of my friends here. He was just saying hi and acknowledging that he knows me. And no, he’s not a dbag… he is quite the opposite. SBR proved you wrong… I think you already had a preconceived notion that Duke is a “dbag school,” so you were looking for evidence to prove you theory. But your evidence is wrong. Why don’t you come visit Duke before making such judgments?

I think there’s enough evidence on this thread for the OP to determine if Duke is indeed as dou**ey as its reputed to be.

nik, I did visit Duke. I found what I like to call the academic equivalent of the “little man’s complex”. It seems everybody at Duke “knew a guy” who got into Harvard or Princeton, but chose DUKE! You boys just seemed to take yourselves way too seriously. Surprisingly, or not, the Harvard, Princeton, Yale kids were a lot more easy going and able to joke about the alleged shortcomings of their schools.
Anyway, carry on - I was just goofing with you about the popped collar and hair product.

Yup from all of the 10/6500 Duke students that regularly post on here.

Must have taken a long time to talk to enough of the Duke student population to collect a sufficiently random sample to take this representative data.
