Why do people judge people based on appearance?

Why do people always judge people by appearance? It really ****es me off. People look at
me and think I am smart( which is not a bad thing) but they think I am nerdy. I may look nerdy but I am really not. I love sports and other activites and studying is not my life. I don't even like studying and get average grades.
Whenever I try to make friends people, they look at me and if I am not wearing the hollister or abecrombie or the fancy clothes or I look like them they ignore me. What do you guys think and any one have any appearance. For once, I just want people to know I really am.

<a href=“Halo effect - Wikipedia”>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halo_effect</a>

Because it’s easy. Because outward appearance is right there, while most people don’t walk around carrying a list of their sports and hobbies and social history.

Besides, personality makes up more of an appearance than clothes do. As long as your clothes aren’t completely out there, most people won’t make lasting judgments until they hear you speak.

Now, when this is happening, are you speaking with complete strangers? Students you see but have never spoken to before this? And are these approaches rather impromptu and unexpected, from their perspective? Because that would explain their behavior.

It’s just human nature, unfortunately. You’d be hard-pressed to find someone who makes no judgments based on outside appearances alone.

I think it’s because that’s the first thing they notice about you, your appearance. I’d just forget about them, you’re better off without them as friends. Just remember that not everyone is like that.

Back in olden times, first impressions help determine if the person approaching you was a friend or foe. If the stranger looked like you or you recognized them then you didn’t need to see if they were carrying weapons.
Nowadays, we visually judge people so we can decide how to interact with them/or not.
My BS for the day. Enjoy.

Because people suck. Case closed.

Lol, why is this so shocking? I essentially agree with Batllo’s “BS”.

^^^lol, and also in olden times appearance determined if you wanted to…eh, produce your offspring with that person or not…all depending on their strength, attractiveness, confidence, etc.

I agree, it’s a bit old these days. But appearances still mean a lot. Stand straighter, smile naturally, and relax. Groom yourself and dress pertly. The people who judge by clothing brand aren’t judging on appearances, really, as they fail to take into consideration a lot more factors like postures, etc.

They’re just shallow. Whatev.

It doesn’t matter to me that people do this, I think I have done this a few times, I wish I hadn’t but…oh well. I can only recall two times that I have done this and I didn’t think to myself woah! that girl is WEIRD! I thought to myself…wow… unique fashion sense. Her hair was entirely the color of ketchup…The other was working a pink/purple mohawk…

People are in control of most of the aspects of appearance on which they are judged. It makes perfect sense that one is judged on how one chooses to comport.

i think everyone generally ignores everyone regardless of what clothes they wear

no seriously there are 48574987389 people in your classes and 70% wear the hollister or the abercrombie so how are you supposed to stand out except by actually being friendly and approaching people? not saying you don’t. it’s just that very, very few people do. in general people are so worried about not being welcomed that they rarely think about welcoming others.

like seriously, half the people you talk to won’t be thinking “omg she’s not wearing abercrombie she must be a total dork” they’re probably thinking “how does my hair look? does that girl think i come off as a dork?”

i think that came out wrong but you probably got the general idea

Why the hell do you care what other people think of you?

Get some security and self-confidence please.
