There was a thread in the college search forum where someone refused to go to college in California because he couldn't stand the heat, and I've read lots of stuff by people saying they can't go to California cause it's too hot.

Say what? I've spent about an equal amount of summers in California and New York, and California summers are much nicer. 75-80 degree weather, a nice ocean breeze in otherwise dry air, and no rain beats 90 degree weather, sticky humidity, and thunderstorms thank you very much.

Depends where…UC merede, UC riverside, UC davis will be very hot…100+ degrees easily!..UCs like UCSB,UCSD,UCI,ect. near the beaches will be rather cool.

^Good to know. Thanks for enlightening me.

They must be referring to the May through October inland/valley weather, in places like UCDavis, Merced, and maybe others. Of course that’s not a problem in the “winter” (November through Febuary; unless you mind living without show.

For some people, that’s too hot.

I’d rather think California is quite cold…up here in the Berkeley Hills. Since last November there were a total of 10 days when temperatures were even up to 80.

It’s only cool if you’re along the beach.
I ‘live’ (one parent) in the SoCal desert technically, and it’s easily in the high 90’s during the summer. It does get “chilly” at night though.

Mind you, I think that’s cool, because my main home (other parent) is in one of the hottest, most humid areas of the country.
And I go to school in St. Louis, which is also miserable in the summer.

Fortunately, I like that.
I’d take a humid summer over a cold winter any day.

California has way too much of a variety in terms of climate to say it is too hot.

Sacramento, and the central valley, imo, is too hot (100-110+ in the summer), but here in Berkeley it is quite nice (Well at least during the year, right now it is kind of hot at times).

Overall California is pretty nice, but in the summer it can get somewhat hot in some areas.

If you think 80 degree weather is “too hot”, do everyone a favor and go live in Alaska.

People don’t set their air conditioners much under that. And that’s inside without the breeze.

Where are summers cooler? Oregon, Washington, and, anywhere else?

Alaska, the arctic, Iceland, Norway, Finland, Sweden etc

Anyway, Cali isn’t hot, some days yeah it is but for the most part it’s great year-round.

The problem is you get acclimatized to the weather, so when it goes above 80 you’re not used to it. Whereas here in DC for instance, in the summer it’s rare for it to NOT go over 80.

My D is in Oregon for an internship. She called today to say they probably weren’t even hitting 70 today, in July! She actually is missing the hot Georgia summer.

Why do people think Alaska is cold? Oh wait…

Highs of 73, 71 and 70 today at UCLA, UCSB and UCSD respectively. It was cooler (even overcast) earlier in the week.

" Why do people think Alaska is cold? Oh wait… "

because it’s near the ****ing arctic maybe? the average high in Anchorage in July and August is the mid-60s, same with Juneau.

^ I’m not sure if it hit 60 today. I actually really enjoy Anchorage summer weather, but the blasted sun just doesn’t go down.

Yeah the main cities in California (San Diego, SF, LA) are actually cool in the summer when compared to where I live. But in the winters they are warmer.

Very moderate climate but I do remember something like 110 degree heat 40 miles east of San Diego. Crazy because on that same day it was 75 in San Diego.

Because in Palm Springs, where I live, it is beautiful from November through May and the rest of the time it is 120 degrees. And people like to say “oh, but it is a dry heat”. ***??? It’s still 120! The pools get to 95 degrees. And 95 degree pool water is NOT refreshing.
