Why do people want others to read their essays?

Or, rather, why would you want other students your age reading your essays? Most likely, they don't know much more about writing than you do, they are in a conflict of interest with you, and they are not your target audience. I think that other students, especially ones on CC, should be your last resource, in case everyone else (particularly teachers) fails you. So, why are so many people still drawn to CC for advice?

Usually the students who read the essays have written personal essays already, so they can give advice. People who ask us to read essays probably ask teachers too. Ultimately the authors have to use their own judgment in deciding whether to listen to us or not.

olgita, you can ask at the Parents Forum and generally some parents are willing to help. I, too, question the wisdom of relying on students to advise about college essays.

I relied almost solely on the advice from four of my high school teachers (2 English teachers, AP US History teacher, and Journalism teacher) for my main commonapp essay, and had my best friend comment on one of my supplementary essays. It never even entered my mind to ask people on CC for advice, though now that you mention it, parent forums might have been helpful. Oh, well :) I'm past all that, thankfully, so this is advice for next year's applicants!

I am a parent; I work in PR and am also an adjunct communications professor. I enjoy reading essays and am happy to assist. I when thanked by a few cc students I helped with essays and resumes they told me that it was easier to ask for help in an anonymous forum. One student also told me his parents didn’t speak English. I told my son this and it made him appreciate my nagging him…. I enjoy reading and providing feedback to enhance student essays. If anyone wants me to read and comment please feel free to PM! I have time this long weekend…………

IMO it's better to have a wide audience give you advice even if the essay is focused on a very small audience. I think others who are also writing the essay have a different insight than teachers/adults. The essay needs to be entertaining, and who has a shorter attention span than stressed ou teenagers applying to college?

I don't agree that essays need to be "entertaining".

entrancestone, but if the essay is targeted at adults only, does it make sense to even attempt to please a wider teenage audience, possibly sacrificing some elements of the writing that would be appealing exclusively to the adcoms?
