Why do we do EA/ED?

I’ve had this notion for a long time that I was going to do MIT EA, since MIT is by far my first choice school and I really do love it. But November, I realize, is quite soon, and now I’m wondering: why?

Why do we apply to schools EA/ED? Is it a declaration of our unequivocal love (aww, how sweet)? - surely not? Is it because colleges accept a greater percentage of EA/ED applicants? Can’t be - I thought that since EA applicants were self-selecting, it doesn’t make a difference or can possibly be worse for you if you’re not on your way to becoming a Rhodes scholar already.

So…aside from the earlier deadline and hearing from colleges earlier, what is the real advantage to applying EA or ED somewhere?

<p>Well I know it gives u sort of an edge compared to RD. Besides i want to slack off and be relieved quickly that is if i am accepted.</p>

<p>Apply ED gives you an advantage since the ED applicant pool is typically weaker than during RD and they often fill up 30-40% of the open slots with ED applicants. Apply EA doesn't have that advantage so it really is just to get it over with sooner.</p>

<p>Don't apply ED anywhere if you also plan to apply for finan aid since you give up the ability to compare FA packages, and you may bind yourself to a very high payment.</p>

<p>Well, SOMETIMES schools have higher acceptance rates for EA than RD, but that may just be because the applicant pool is stronger.</p>

<p>And the reason for ED/EA - makes life easier for the colleges.</p>

<p>"And the reason for ED/EA - makes life easier for the colleges." On the money, kcirsch is.</p>
