I always wonder why we work so hard. We dream about going to Stanford or Berkeley and work so hard just to have a chance at acceptance there while others dream about going to less distinguished colleges. However, these "others" seem to end up in the same or even better position as a person that attended Berkeley. I always ask myself this when Ap's or grades roll around. I guess its human nature to want to strive for the best even though the mediocre may be alright too.

I'm definately the hardest working of my friends, and they're always griping about how even if they were accepted to HYP they wouldn't go there because it's all people who 'don't know how to have fun'.

I guess that's sortof true.

Even though I could probably get into CMU, NYU, UCLA and others in that same genre, I keep having this feeling that I'm going to end up at either UMich (instate) or DePaul. I really have a feeling about DePaul.

Who knows? I'm going to pick which campus I think I would be happiest on.

personally i think ivy league and all that is way overrated
and it doesnt help that all the work and things we learn in high school will be completely useless in the working world.

We work because the world has too many people competing for too little resources, and if you give up, you're like a little kid in a busy airport--no support, no hopes, nothing. You'd die out there if you didn't study for all of these tests and such. Yet I'm still on CC and CC won't put food on the table in the future. Neither will history but..eh.

i always say we should all become farmers and give each other food wheny ou need it haha and just live our lives out like that (sounds a bit like communism huh lol).

i used to be perfectionistic like most CCers, and something happened and my ranked dropped 50 spots from from #1. oh well, life goes on... i really wish i could regain my perfectionistic attitude...i think i will need it, as i'm aspiring for top grad schools. the other poster mentioned that one has to constantly work to stay at the top but why would a person want to be at the top in the first place? material possessions can bring temporary happiness, that's all. i can understand if this theory is applied to a primitive society, where only a select few survive but the reality is, if you don't graduate from the the ivy league, you still have a great chance at a fine life.

thanks for posting this question. i think it's an important one to think about.

ya seriously... we always seem to lose sight at the better things in life.......but what am i to say, even witht his point im still trying to do my best to get the best ><

I agree with sarorah. I remember once that one of my teachers told me about how 80% of the people work so hard and share 20% of the world's resources, while the 20% of the rich people get to share 80% of the world's resources. I guess it isn't exactly true, but that is what the world is like. I would really rather be the 20% working for the 80%, than the 80% working their butts off for 20%.

This is very important to keep in mind while you're going through this process. Not that you shouldn't try for your dream college, but it's not what makes or breaks successful people. I'm sure you personally know many more happy and prosperous people who went to less distinguished schools, and perhaps distinguished themselves there, than those who went to Stanford and company. What's important is finding out what you really want to do with your life, and going for it.

i think we work hard because we have a special drive that not many people have (although cc makes it seem like everyone has it). i think that it will pay off in the end, because when there are two people duking it out for one spot at something, who's going to get it; the cc kid or the other one? we want it more than anyone else, and we know what it takes to get it.

I like being the best because i like feeling of being the best.

Nothing else.. Welllll i guess there's a little voice in my head saying if I do good, I'll be better than everyone else in the future (but don't worry, I dont listen to that shlt)

I don't know why I work. I have thought about HYPMS a little but never really did stuff specifically for them. I work hard too (somewhat) sleeping around 2 AM each day and getting up at 6 to go to school, doing research on the side, taking univ. classes, etc. but now it feels like all the enjoyment and stuff I get from succeeding in things is fairly transient and the "high" from an award or success only lasts a couple weeks. In the end, it sometimes feels like I don't have anything really, besides some good friends that I've made over the years. Moral: friends are the most important things. Don't give them up for HYPMS.
