Why do *YOU* deserve MIT???

<p>xxxzxxx.. are you for real? That is insane. Were you from a state that never sends anyone or something like that or affirmative action?</p>

<p>hmmm well I guess I'll continue the 5 why's and 5 why not's!!</p>

<p>Why I'll get in:
* Female
* filling out patent applications
* Lots of programming activities
* 4.0 uw, 1/600 rank at top 50 public school in US
* interviewer liked my humor and personality</p>

<p>Why I won't:
* No "pure" research/programs
* No awards =(
* Teacher rec (one) is lukewarm?</p>

<p>Why I'll get in:
-Sweet job/internship
-personality
-eagle scout
-decent test scores</p>

<p>why i will get D-neyed:
-no research/big awards/inventions
-mediocre essay
-male
-im not pretty enough</p>

<p>"Well for EA its 50% acceptance rate for women and about 12% for men... and this is not defer included."</p>

<p>we're all nerds here so let's do some math. The early action pool was ~3000. about 350 out of those were accepted. 47% of those accepted were girls. that makes... oh... ~150/160 accepted girls. that, according to you, is 1/2 the applicant pool. 300 girls apply early. how many boys? well, 3000-300 nothing too rigorous there- 2700 boys. the early action applicant pool according to you had about a 1-10 ratio of girls to boys.</p>

<p>yes about 377 girls applied and 160 or 170 got in... i cant remember exact numbers. I was amazed at this too...</p>

<p>fixing mine:</p>

<p>Get in:
Interview
Leadership
Good Board Scores
Good Guidance/English Rec
Male Beauty Pageant Winner (optional essay)</p>

<p>Won't Get In
No decent Awards
No research
Weak essays
Someone from my non-competitive public high school went last year, first in school history
Generic Math Rec</p>

<p>don't bother being amazed at it. my point is you're wrong.</p>

<p>yes, i'm real; in order to hide my real identity, i will not tell you any specific things about my origin; all i can say is that i
1) asian female
2) was the first one ever in my high school to apply for MIT
3) had experienced a very harsh/bad life already (i don't want to share...it hurt me a lot)
4) came from an under-represented state
5) was a domestic applicant</p>

<p>

No, there were 377 total admits, of whom 177 were female. There were not 377 female early applicants.</p>

<p>Get in:
-2280 SAT (800M/740CR/740W)
-40+ math awards, primarily Mu Alpha Theta, including four state calculus team first places (out of 6 competitions last year), 2 individual national first places (number theory, calculus ciphering)
-Attended FSU's Young Scholars Program (bio.fsu.edu/ysp) last summer (did research/took special classes designed for the program)
-4.0 unweighted GPA/5.14 weighted GPA (though I'm not sure what that converts to under the other scales out there? our scale is 4.0 for regular, 5.0 for honors, 6.0 for AP)
-#1 in the class out of 1155 seniors (school has 5300 total)
-Good recommendations (calculus teacher usually does generic ones, but she wrote me a personalized one)
-VP of school's Mu Alpha Theta, Treasurer of Brain Bowl
-Maybe the interview? push on this one
-Maybe the essay? </p>

<p>Won't get in:
-Indian male
-I didn't do too much the summers after freshman/sophomore year
-7 on AIME? compared to all the USAMOers out there applying...
-My volunteer work doesn't stand out that much
-There's another applicant from my school who did WTP @ MIT this summer, who's also applying EA
-Perhaps too one-dimensional?
-SAT II science (730 chem, though I got a 5 on AP chem)
-Parents both professors (mom went to Indian Institute of Technology); not underprivileged or underrepresented</p>

<p>And then there's the luck of the draw.</p>

<p>...seriously? Some of the "won't get in" 's on this thread are kind of ridiculous...
"won't get in"? Have fun worrying, and enjoy the tube when it comes.</p>

<p>

Who? Or at least, what state are you from?</p>

<p>Eh, might as well do my own, because why not?</p>

<p>Will -
Great essays
Female (though the Asian-ness takes away some of that advantage)
Great teacher recs
Pretty good interview - went longer than everyone else in my area's did
Women's Technology Program (although does that honestly <em>help</em> admittance any?)
Grades/GPA in general </p>

<p>Won't -
Bad science SAT 2 (730)
No math awards
Didn't even take AMC/AIME
No national awards whatsoever
Asian</p>

<p>I'm from Florida (I'd rather not give out the name on a public forum)</p>

<p>Oh, she was probably in the Mechanical Engineering group, then....I don't think there were any Florida kids in EECS. (I was just wondering if I knew her or not).</p>

<p>yeah, she told me she did WTP-ME.</p>

<p>Yeah, we didn't really talk to the MechE kids much. :-/</p>

Honestly, I think it's much better to worry than to be overconfident at this point. Hope for the best, sure, but prepare for the worst.</p>

<p>Pros:
2350 SAT (800 CR, 750 M, 800 W)
1/288 in my class, 98.8605 unweighted GPA (103.3721 weighted)
790 Chem SATII
Recommendations (Chem teacher who I had for two consecutive chemistry classes, english teacher who loved my writing, plus an extra from my karate instructor whom I've known for over 10 years)
Interview (my interviewer works with my girlfriend's dad, and he stopped by his office the day after to say that he liked me and thought I was very energetic about MIT - he's also offered to get me a summer job at Fairchild (where he works))
Essay - about my experiences in karate
ECs - Karate black belt, 4 years of mock trial, school newspaper editor, NHS, district technology advisory member and volunteer)
Awards - Rensselaer Math and Science medal
Summer programs - TA at a local gifted and talented summer program for two years, student at WPI Frontiers this past summer</p>

<p>Cons:
730 MathIIc SATII
Only 3 APs, though my school only offers 4
No internships or research
No activities during Summer 2005 (though this was because of family circumstances, which I explained to my interviewer)
No national competitions, AMC, etc.
Volunteer work is not on the scale of 500 hours at the soup kitchen
Two people from my school have been admitted in recent years (though I'm still not convinced that this actually hurts my chances)</p>

<p>As far as preparing for the worst, I'm pretty sure that I'll get into Rensselaer (because I have their medal), and Cornell is a definite possiblity. Princeton I'm not as sure that I'll get into, but I'm also not as sure that I would want to go there, as the social life there is very rich-kid-Ivyish.</p>

<p>Why does MIT deserve <em>ME</em>?</p>

<p>of course, mit has one of the strongest mechanical engineering (ME) programs in the world; it deserves the ME reputation much more than any other schools!!!!!!!!</p>
