Oh ok. Thanks! :)

Just in case: you can't take placement tests on the spot. The university assigns certain dates for each subject placement exam to be taken, and you have to reserve a spot for it.

Oh yeah, whenever I visit I swear that I see 90% Asians. haha. I'm Asian myself, but the lack of diversity made me want to keep away. However, now I realize there are generally more Asians all over the place and Irvine just happens to have a lot of Asians :P I suppose it really shouldn't matter, but I guess diversity just made other schools more appealing (especially since I live in an area where there are generally only Hispanics and Asians).

Oh, I was wondering about the major change too. I got into Biology, but I just realized there was neurobiology (which I wanted in the first place). Does it make any difference (like, is it any easier) that the major I want to change to is in the same school? (Nevermind, just read the answer to that. haha)

Oh. Thanks anyway. I will talk to my admission counsellor at UCI then.

Keep in mind, people here who have Irvine as a back-up are only a small majority of students going there. I know there are loads of students who got in and really do want to go there.

i like it because its safe and it has a good computer sci program

I might choose UCI over Berkeley. I don't even really know what I want to do yet, so I'm not choosing by which school has some program (although i've contemplated Business).

One of the biggest things I like about UCI is its location (but, i'm sure you should already know what's around). I like that it's nearby a lot of things - shopping & beaches - and is a safe little suburb. I also like that it's a short road trip to big cities, such as LA. Also, San Diego & Mexico aren't too far off. Also, I love the SoCal music scene. There are some big venues in Anaheim, and definitely a lot going on in LA.
However, UCI is a commuter school, so weekends might be a little "dead." But I'm sure it's easy to find things to do / parties.
I like that UCI doesn't really have a party school rep, nor much of a nerdy one? I need that in between-ness, because I'd still like to do well in school, but have a good time.
But yeah, I know that UCI is known to have a good Bio & Computer Science program.

Oh, also there's Kaba Modern :p.

Do you know if the campus ever brings in fun events? Dances, bands, etc?

I just came back from a norcal roadtrip. I have to tell you, i'd choose UCI over Berkeley HANDS DOWN. It's much cleaner and nicer in Irvine. San Francisco was certainly interesting, but I would never want to live there.

@moey: UCI over UCB?????

The city is safe, the people are friendly, it has a great science program.
& im a huge ducks & angels fan. hahah

@shruthi

I chose UCI over UCB and UCLA for the location/honors program/scholarship.

Plus, I plan on going to graduate school so theres not important that I go to a high prestige school right now

shoefactory: i could not agree with you more.

that's the way i look at things
it doesnt matter now.

I'll be more concerned about going to UC Berkeley for my graduate education than I am as an undergraduate. I believe the university earns its prestige from that and research than from undergraduate education, Cal State University takes the cake for that.

@ShoeFactory I got accepted into the UCI honors program, but haven't heard much about it. What's good/bad about it?

I also figured that I could still go to a 'prestigious' school for grad school. But prestige won't mean anything if i don't like it there. I'm not going to go to a school just so I can be proud to say I'm going there, yet in reality I don't even love it. Cal and UCI are in completely different environments.

@moey

I will paste part of my response to a PM from a parent 2 weeks ago.

"The honors program is great here, there are many perks and we are one big community. They seem to be really wanting to attract better students so UCI has a big emphasis on the honors program.

I have no idea about the honors program at UCSB, but you cannot go wrong with the one at UCI. I just googled up the UCSB honors program, and they have similar benefits except that we also have more honors study rooms, guaranteed honors housing for 4 years, and honors classes with smaller class sizes.

Yes, we are really that enthusiastic about the honors program. The thing that makes me love honors is honors housing. Being surrounded by people that are hard working and intellectual has definitely had a positive influence on me. Everyone in my honors dorm knows each other, and we work together in our classes, have similar classes, and do everything together. So take that into account when selecting the school you'll be at for 4 years."

The only bad thing I can think of for UCI CHP is the humanities core program. It's really tough and its a mandatory for non-engineering CHP students.

Send me a PM or AIM me if you want more info, I'm too lazy to type a response right now so I just pasted an old response.

It's a sad reality that a lot of people (certainly not the majority) chose to go to Irvine because they got rejected from UCLA/UCB/etc/etc, but I have not met one person who did not grow to love the school. Just keep that in mind..

I like it here because its safe, kickass english program, a lot of undergrad opportunities (research, internships, etc), beautiful clean campus (no renegade homeless people coughUCBcough)

Even if I got into UCLA, I don't think I would have gone anyway. The fact is, I am sick of trying to compete with my peers and be top of my class when all I want to do is focus on my learning and enjoying myself. At top schools like UCLA, everyone is so obsessed over grades (which are probably already inflated) that they sabotage people (taking out required books from the library, getting people sick during finals/midterms) just to get ahead of the class. I'm sure a lot of it is just stories, but going from a competitive high school to a super-competitive college is just so... unappealing to me. The people at UCI are intelligent, driven, and want to succeed and want to challenge themselves, but they're SOOOO chill and so laid back that they're not ridiculous or crazy about it. That's what I love most about this school - the chill factor.

if uci hasnt contacted me about the honors program but i want to be in it is there a way i can apply for it?

If you weren't contacted for the honors program through admissions, you may have to wait and apply. Search "Campuswide Honors Program" on the UCI website to learn about how to apply to the honors program; there's an application, with grade and essay requirements.

hiii question about the CHP,
does alot of people in CHP not live in honor housing?
is there any hall that CHP student can dorm with non-CHP student without feeling left out by CHP community?

thanks alot!
