Explain "chance me" threads please!

I've been on CC for six months or so. From the beginning I thought the "chance me" threads were ridiculous. Maybe not fully - some might have some weakness in their presentation for which they seek advice on how to address. But for the most part, the "chance me" presentations are absurd. Here's a case in point:

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/middlebury-college/556885-chances-class-2009-mbury.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/middlebury-college/556885-chances-class-2009-mbury.html</a></p>

When I read posts like that I can't decide whether these are sincere or whether they are designed to intimidate others. I am open-minded about it, however, so iif someone has an explanation of how such posts are a good thing and/or motivated in sincerity I would enjoy hearing it.

I think the "chance me" threads are not all motivated by the same impulse--Some are seeking reassurance, some are showing off, some are probably not entirely accurate (ie- the thread describes who the student plans to be rather than who they are at that moment). Some are genuinely confused (like the rest of us!) as to what is "good enough" for a particular school.

What I find more interesting is that the most responders are other high school students-- Why would the posters think that another student will have some magic insight into the admissions process is puzzling to me.

My favorite response is when the person asking to be "chanced" has perfect test scores, perfect grades, exceptionally high rank and has practically been the keynote speaker at the demo/repub national convention, and the responder says....."well, you might have a CHANCE......but only if you apply ED"!!!

take EVERYTHING with a grain of salt.....
