Why Do You Self-Study AP's?

I am doing it in descending order

  1. My AP teachers aren’t very good ("-_-)
    2)I have a genuine interest
  2. To save money for college since it looks to be long , hard years from here on out…

I would take your poor AP teachers for a AP classes for my school lol.

I may self-study AP Physics B/C (haven’t decided which) because I’m taking Calculus BC in school and want to take part in the USAPhO this year. I may also self-study AP Biology because I don’t have time to take it later on in high school. I may also self-study AP Computer Science A, for no apparent reason than that I feel like learning programming. All these classes are offered at my school, but I also have a deep interest in each of them. I doubt I’ll get to APCS this year though. Would this really look bad to colleges? And is it really extreme because my school offers the classes?

^What grade are you in? I doubt doing extra work on your own will ever “look bad to colleges”. btw, you probably know this already, but if you’re taking Calc BC you might as well take Physics C.

My school offers most AP courses I"d want to take but I’ll end up self studying one or two which aren’t available, like music theory, just out of interest. Unfortunately they probably won’t even get me any worthwhile credit in college, but I’m okay with that.

I’m a sophomore.

I’ll probably self study Psych and Envi Sci because I don’t want to waste a class at school on an easy AP.

I would rather spend a year learning something harder, like Physics C.

Cuz I’m CRRRRRRAZY for coco puffs.

I self study because of two reasons

To make my app look better (and if anyone says that’s so dumb or you’re stupid. Well I bet you anything that most CC-ers do it because of that reason too. Because seriously, if you didn’t care about your college app, while are you self studying a college level course. And don’t you dare say that you like it. Because com’on really? You call learning a hard class fun? ;))

Because my school doesn’t offer it

27: 1.“most CC-ers” don’t do it. Get your facts straight.

Well that should be the ONLY reason. It make no sense to add on to your class load if you already taking AP.

I don’t get why self studying APs is so controversial. It’s not like it’s a life or death decision…

^lmao quote of the day.

I don’t get why myself either?

whoa whoa whoa, wait what? really most CC-ers don’t do that?

almost every post I see on CC has some sort of self studying some hardcore class.

So I’m sorry, my apologies !

I definitely think self-studiers are a minority on CC (those who don’t self-study don’t talk about it, so there’s some confirmation bias) and an even smaller minority among students around the country who take APs at school.

In 2011, only 18% of the graduating class nationwide had passed at least one AP. And that’s considered an extremely high figure compared to previous years. The national mode number of AP tests taken is one (not counting zero). Only 60% of high schools offer AP courses at all and the average number of APs offered per school is 5. There are entire school systems where APs are almost unheard of. Take Baltimore City: 12 of the 19 public schools don’t have any AP classes and the average number of APs offered per city school is 1.6. Throughout the entire city, only 9 of the 34 AP subjects are offered at all.

I think people on CC and people at schools where APs are the norm generally don’t realize that they are outliers.
