I had this discussion with a teacher today and am curious. Why do you guys take AP classes/why did you pick the ones you did?

For starters, I would be WAY too bored in a regular class. My high school has limited honors classes, so after the few basic levels in each subject, APs are offered. Another reason is that I WANT to learn (WAH!? People actually want to learn?) about things I’m genuinely interested in, and AP classes delve further into the materials than a regular or an honors class would. For instance, I LOVE Calculus! Most people hate it, but I find something soothing about it, despite having 2 hours of homework each night in just that class.

I’ll be man enough and admit it, but the GPA boost provided by AP classes in my school is also nice.

for college

for extra gpa points

so i’m not in regular classes that are boring (as said above) or around people who i don’t like

'cause i’m in gifted and they make you

To ensure I have proper “rigor in [my] secondary school transcript.” Also, GPA weight. Without AP classes, I’d probably only be in the top 25% of my class rather than top 4%.

I’m not taking any right now (I take college classes full time), but they’re really the only classes at my school worth taking. I self-studied AP Calculus BC because I wanted to place into higher-level stuff.
My high school only had four AP classes last year, so that’s why I picked the ones I did. I self-studied AP Stats and APUSH for no particular reason.
My school doesn’t weight GPA or consider course rigor in calculating class rank.

I am at the point where I cannot stand regular classes where nobody cares.

In all complete honesty?

Because I was really tired of sitting in class with people who could care less about school and people who were rude and jerks. At my school, AP classes= ticket out of classes with people like that. I also really like English and history.

LOL it must be nice to have AP classes that are actually full of driven students… all of my AP classes are full of slackers. With the exception of my AP Lit class which is incredibly small and full of only intelligent/super motivated students, all of my AP classes have been a mix between ivy-bound top-tenners and kids who are barely on track to graduate…

I’d say about 70% of my AP Gov class has less than a 3.0 GPA… lol…

I hate the kind of people that show up in honors/regular courses. They move at a ridiculously slow pace, which is why my gov teacher is letting me self-study the ap material next door in the teacher’s lounge.

Personally, regular classes =/= students who do not care. You can find kids who don’t care and or rude in AP classes too. I was in regular classes in the 6th grade and actually enjoyed my classes. I moved up to honors courses second semester of the 6th grade because It was pretty easy.

I take AP courses because I wish to learn more than the basic information of its honors equivalent. I’ve only taken two so far, biology and chemistry and right now I’m only taking four. Two of the AP classes I actually enjoy, and the other two are for requirements.

$$$
10char

$ for what??

More money

^ precisely.

ah yes that clears things up

I only take ap courses in subjects I enjoy, I am really interested in the material. I love humanities.

Plus, the AP type kids at my school are kind of like a really cool clique. Funny, smart, down to earth kids, that have been in the same classes for years. We get along really well, and have a lot of good times together. I have SO much more fun In my AP gov class and GT English class than in my reg math class.

Also, I want to go to Stanford

I self study AP classes for college admissions.

AP classes through school are still crappy; all the teachers at my school are HORRIBLE.

Because I took too many other classes…my only options are AP’s this year.

I take AP courses in subjects that I’m interested in. For me, that’s math and science. I never take an AP class that I know I may not do well in.
Last year (sophmore) I took AP Chemistry, this year (junior) I’m taking AP Calculus BC and AP Biology, and I will self study AP Computer Science (not offered at my school). A lot of people I know are also taking AP US History, but that’s not really my area of interest and I fear that taking it might hurt my gpa more than it will help it.

Next year I plan on taking AP Physics and AP Government/Economics.

AP Statistics & AP Calculus - I am one of the most advanced students at my school for math, and these pretty much were the only two classes available (besides College Algebra… but it was a pretty easy decision to turn this down since it’s generally a remedial class in college…) since I took Trig as a sophomore. I probably would have taken Stats regardless though, it seemed interesting.

AP Language & Literature - It was AP or regular (no Honors for upperclassmen), and I didn’t want to be in a class with people that think 3 sentences is acceptable for a paragraph or those that don’t know the difference between your and you’re. Plus I felt obligated… my sophomore English teacher practically forced me and so did my friends.

AP Psychology & AP Government - I actually like social studies, and I’m pretty good at them. These two are the only social studies (not including history, which I don’t like) that my school offers. I wish I could take AP Econ (I might do it independent study) too.

AP Physics - I love the teacher. There is no way I ever would have succeeded in science and math classes without him. So, I took AP Physics to challenge myself while I have plenty of support. Honestly words can’t even describe how awesome I think this teacher is.
