Why do you want to be a doctor?

not fun? I thought everything medically related was fun....haha

(sarcasm intended)

I agree with what BigRedMed said. And if you only want money and presitge, there are much better career options than that.

I've always wanted to be a doctor from as early as I can remember but was always discouraged because of the workload that was associated with becoming a doctor and the "difficulty" of succeeding. The moment I knew I wanted to become a doctor was when my grandmother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer when I was about eight years old. I remembered how much pain she was in and I wanted desperately to relieve her from that pain. My grandmother was a beautiful person with a beautiful heart and seeing her in pain, I promised myself I wouldn't let anyone feel the same way she did. I promised myself I would become a doctor, just to help those like my grandmother who were in pain and had given up on themselves. Also, my grandmother not having the opportunity to attend school and etc always told me that I could be anything I wanted to if I worked hard. I know being a doctor would make her proud but most importantly I would be doing something that Ive always had passion for.

op_city, what would these high prestige jobs be?

Obviously prestige is very hard to quantify, but the list of professions that make more money is extensive, especially when conceptualized as net present values.

There's a saying that goes the wife and kids of doctors are the lucky ones who leeches off the father who works all week and doesn't seem to make up for all the stress while the rest of the family get to sit around the house and enjoy the money.

well, what is this list of jobs?

Note that I have picked two of the highest paying medical specialties.

There's another thread where BRM lists a bunch of things, too, but I haven't been able to find it.

Ah, here's the original discussion on the subject:

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=191962&highlight=finance%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=191962&highlight=finance</a></p>

ah, you explain economics very nicely. :)

Thanks. :) Hopefully, my new boss will think so, too.

boss? what kind of job are you getting?

It's just a summer thing. Analyzing the effects of bankruptcy law on US economic models.

I want to be a doctor because I hear beautiful music and see beautiful colors when even think about being one. I want to influence people, not just their physical life. God exist. I want to show people how successful, determined and motivated a person can become with a drive to help people in all aspects of life. I want people to think again when they loose hope. I want to become this fearless person that people know they can depend on in the most critical situations. I want to be a leader.

Its sord of corny but its true

thats not just corny, its actually sickening. i think you would find yourself more fulfilled in your career if you became, say, a televangelist.

:)
