Why does EVERYONE want to be become a doctor?

Seriously, I don't get it. What's so appealing about dealing with people and stuff?

Maybe they like people and helping (and the money isn't bad)?

Helping people, job security, good pay, science-based.

I don't know about EVERYONE wanting to become a doctor (I certainly don't!), but the reasons for becoming one aren't all that mysterious. Great pay, prestige, and HUGE advantage when it comes to getting dates (well, ok, maybe only for the men). Obviously, there are those who genuinely want to help people, but I think the main reasons a lot of hs grads are initially 'turned on' to medicine are the ones I listed above (not saying I agree with it, just the way the world is I guess).

I like the idea of being a doctor, but what turns me off is the malpractice suits.

As for the dating thing, remember that a real girl won't care if you're a doctor or a janitor...she'll base you on your character.

....and how many of these real girls do you know? lol

Being a doctor would become part of your character. Also, females are naturally drawn to men who will be better suited to provide for their children.

EDIT: AND, have you ever encountered such a woman?

when i was in kindergarden and u had to learn about the diffrent occupations the first ones where alwayz doctor....fireman..teacher...**** like that.

to me. doctor is everyones default. only a few people are dead set on being one. i wanted to be a doctor too. i changed when i found out what i really wanted to do. plus. telling someone u wanna be a doctor makes them go...oooh.

I thought about becoming a doctor once, but realistically it could never happen. I don't mind blood or any of that stuff, but I hate Math and Science. I'm just awful at it. I'm sort've struggling through Calculus as it is and Chemistry was just plain awful. You couldn't pay me a million dollars to go to medical school, which is why I'm going to the other route.

Right, and guys don't choose a girl based on looks...

i think all the new medical tv shows have something to do with it. er, scrubs, etc are all popularizing the doctor field. how many people want to go into politics after watching the west wing?

The same thing has happened with interior design....now that shows like Trading Spaces have invaded our TV screens, aspiring designers are scrambling to get into the business.

A lot of people in high school who want to be doctors think of the money and prestige and involved. Those who don't get that you genuinely need to want to help people, be extra smart and really hard working and not mind being around sick people all the time probably won't ever get to med school.

My parents are doctors, knowing what they do, I've never had the desire to become one...

My parents sort of pushed me into wanting to be a doctor when I was really young and I really do want to become one.
However, archaeology is avery attractive field too.

^
Get an MD and go on digs in your spare time. Digs need doctors, and you'll probably be paid a lot more.

Nothing interesting about being a doctor to me - I was going to be a psychiatrist, but a billion years of school and the equivilant in debts just doesn't do it for me. I want something that I can make good money in without having to be in school until i'm 30.

job stable

Because I'm Desi....

All you Desi kids know what i mean....

NO, I guess I'm not a Desi because I have no idea what you're talking about: Clueless and I mean literally !!!!!!

haha sr6622...everyone asks me if i'm premed.

If tv shows popularize fields and make them 'sexy', we need one for engineers. Not mythbusters, mind you, but hard core designing beams and circuits and polymers engineering.
