Why do you want to go to Mac?

Just looking for some reasons, hoping to learn a little more about the school.

I haven't visited... and I don't know if I will. But I've only heard positive things about the campus/location. The main reason I want to go there is that to me it sounds like a "UChicago school" without being cut-throat or too intimidating. By "UChicago school" I mean it has their kind of reputation- intellectual, inquisitive students who want to learn for the sake of learning. Also, their geography department is supposed to be awesome- they even have an Urban Studies major which is something I really want to do. And, lastly, the fact that they're known for being so diverse and supposed to give decent aid is definitely a Plus Factor.

Continueee....

I'd say everything you said is exactly right. its very intellectual blahdee blah and its NOT competative. everybody is here to learn and better themselves and the world so we dont have to compare ourselves or prove ourselves or show off.
Im in a geography (human geography 111) class now and i LOVE it. it is a great department, I love my prof, (the Urban studies prof, i like him so much im taking another of his classes next semester). I'm going to be a geography political science double major, and i HIGHLY recommend Mac. feel free to email me or message me if you have any questions, I love telling people about Mac cause I love it here.

(ps.. its hard to get into geography classes as a frosh, the more AP credits the better. and if you do apply and get in and decide to accept, i can tell you the secret to getting a good prof..... its not really a secret but it takes til sophomore year to figure it out on ur own. my older soccer buddies told me about it)

Ahh! I'm so glad you responded iplayoboe; I have not yet been able to find someone with experience in the geography department. And I also plan to major in geography and political science... awesome.

By "more AP credits" do you mean AP Geography or AP anything? I got a 5 on my Human Geography exam so hopefully that'll be of some worth....

more AP credits in general. it gives you priority in choosing classes. they SAY that it doesnt make a difference for first semester freshmen, but thats a lie. i got ALL my first choices for classes and I dont know anybody else who did, and I have the max number of AP credits. 24.

go here to see if they will take your AP classes.

a 5 on geography does count.

for quick reference, US history, European History, English, Art History, US gov and Latin count.

I'm not sure, I definitely didnt get all my first choices and had more AP credits than they were willing to accept (I had 32 credits worth, they accepted 24)

On the flip side, I got all my first choices for classes and I had no AP credits coming in.

I'd like to major in anthropology or linguistics and Mac is supposed to have really good programs, especially for the former. Does anyone know any more about either of those? Also, I've never been to MN and Mac is one of the only schools I'm applying to that I haven't visited...so what's St. Paul like?
