Why does EVERYONE want to be become a doctor?

You can be a doctor without being someone who works in hospitals, like my music teacher: she's got a doctorate so we call her Dr. instead of Professor.

But me, I want a doctorate so I can make more money.

I think the OP implied medical doctor.

whats a desi?

Indian person

Typical jobs: doctor or engineer

Everyone wants to be a doctor at first, then come bad grades, hard classes realization of the MCAT. 4 Years of med school. 3 years minimum residency with REALLY crappy pay. Then even more for other specialties, then debts, then malpractice, realization that you usually can't hold a marriage unless you luck out. People think they want to do it. The difference is when push comes to shove half the people back out.

We have several Dr.'s in my family and all of them say if they had to do it all over again, they would not. Jobs are not easy to come by unless you have a specialty that is in high demand. But the jobs ARE there -- but a lot of the times in places you don't want to live. The good news is that shortly there will be a huge demand for Dr.s, especially in family practice because so many are retiring early because they can't stand the red tape. Also, depending upon your specialty, you can make just as much money or more in other fields.

If you want to help people, become a P.A. because they are replacing a lot of Dr.'s with them and you don't have to do as much schooling.

high demand...but most people who say they want to become doctors don't...it's very hard and takes a lot of commitment.

Doctors have always been vital to the community every since they stopped killing people in mass (germs people!). Therefore they've always been given a great amount of respect and seen as pillars of society. Now they are constantly glamorized in tv shows along with lawyers and such. This reinforces the 'doctors rule the earth' stereotype. In real life being a doctor/lawyer is not nearly so interesting, well paying, or safe job wise.

But hey, the more people who want to be Drs the less people to compete with me for my PhD:)

I think it boils down to two things:

1) Money and all the prestige that goes with it.
2) Helping people and idealism that your saving peoples lives (or some variation)

I don't get it either and it does seem like a lot of people, especially on this site want to do it. I know that it takes a TON of work so I don't quite get the amount of people trying for it. That being said I love Grey's Anatomy and watch it every week so I do enjoy seeing it carried out (although the patient stories are usually my least favorite) because hey, it makes good drama. But that responsibility for people's lives makes me avoid it as well. To each his own I say, enjoy your tough science/math classes, the applying, MCATs, med school w/loans and long residencies if you do it.

i used to want to be a doctor too. lol.

but just be glad that a lot of people want to become doctors...we need people to take care of us.

My D wants to become a doctor to help others -- especially those in lesser developed countries. She works in a docs office now and has seen the craziness but still wants to pursue it as a career. As a cancer survivor, she's seen the best docs in the world and the worst. I think she wants to be able to deliver the kind of medical care she knows every child, regardless of family situation or finances derserves. Medicine is a demandin career, like law, if you go into it for the m oney, you will be miserable.

It's cool, it's stimulating, it's dependable, you make buckets of money, you get tons of respect.

btw I'd rather be a lawyer than a doctor. I'm alright at sciences and could probably be a doctor if I wanted to, but lib arts are my strong point. Actually, I don't want to be either a doctor or a lawyer - I'm a writer all the way!!

Me too! But I'm considering law school. I've always been very interested in politics. I have always wanted to be an activist and change the system tom make life better for poorer people.

I love medicine, and love working with animals, so I am going to be a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine

people should not become medical doctors only because they want a high paying job...

People who think medical doctors are a high paying job are just plain stupid. It used to be, 10+ years from now it will not be. Already the money doctors take home is dropping rapidly and lots of doctors are retiring for that reason. Not worth the sacrifice to make the equivalent of 20 bucks and hour for the work you put in.

If your into the money, become a CEO for a top company.
Personally, i'm interested in becomming a doctor after doing some soul searching. I could have easily turn to pharmacy if it's all about the money as I have a gurantee seat in the school of pharmacy. It depends on what drives you. If helping people makes your day, then by all means go for it. If your in it for the money, your not going to be too happy with your work.

As for the dating thing, remember that a real girl won't care if you're a doctor or a janitor...she'll base you on your character.
