Why does household income matter?

My families household income is about $60,000. Will colleges be be more more likely to "throw me a bone" and accept me, or more likely to accept someone who won't require financial assistance? Do they discriminate one way or the other?

Some schools are “need aware” - meaning that they take a student’s financial need into account when making admissions decisions. Other schools are “need blind” - meaning that they admit without even considering whether or not you’ll need financial aid, and then figure out your financial aid award later.

Also, a small percentage of schools (generally, the most competitive schools) try to meet a student’s full financial need. The vast majority don’t meet full need, so they’re happy to admit you, but it’s up to you to figure out how to pay for it.

You need to get yourself over to the [Financial Aid](Financial Aid and Scholarships - College Confidential Forums) forum and start reading . . . start with the threads at the top. They’ll tell you almost everything you need to know about financial aid and paying for college.
