Why does IU not have a Gen Chem II?

Most schools have two semesters of Gen Chem that are done consecutively. Why is there only one semester of Gen Chem at IU (c117)?? Like one has to do C117, then two semesters of Organic, then one can finally take the second semester of inorganic chem (ChemN330). What are the advantages and disadvantages of this?

There is a gen chem II, it’s C118. Chem and biochem majors aren’t allowed to take it. The only person I know who has taken C118 was an exercise science major and she said it was fairly easy and basic. If you read the course description on the chem site, you’ll see that the two courses don’t cover the same material for the most part. I think they want chem majors to take N330 because it’s harder and exposes you to new forms of chemistry.

How about aspiring biology pre-med majors? Is C117-C118 OK?

bruh i wouldnt do c118. it looks like a waste of time. I feel like the N330 course would be very good prep for the MCAT

@turbo93

Please check this:

True enough, the party line is 117 and 330 for medicine hopefuls. So, the expected chem sequence would be:

1st semester: 117 ----- 2nd semester: none
3rd semester 341 ------ 4th semester 342 +343
5th semester 330 ----- 6th look Ma! no more chem (except CHEM-C 383  )

If this is the case what do you do with 1 year of physics if the objective is 201 + 202, you could take 201 2nd semester and 202 6th semester I guess… Is that smart or there’s hidden prereqs for some mystery pre-med science class somewhere for phys 202?

Does anyone have the officially suggested pre-med sequence semester by semester?

@turbo93 there really isn’t a reason to skip a semester in between 117 and 341

According the HPPLC guy here’s the recommended sequence (just have the requirements done in the correct year)

Freshman:
Chem-C103 (3 cr.)
Chem-C117 (3 cr.)
Chem-C127 (2 cr.)
Possibly Chem-C341 (3 cr.)
Biol-L112 (3 cr.)
Psy-P101 or Psy-P155 (3 cr.)
Soc-S100 or Soc-S101 or Soc-S230 (3 cr.)

Sophomore:
Biol-L113 (3 cr.)
Biol-L211 (3 cr.)
Chem-C341 (3 cr.)
Chem-C342 (3 cr.)
Chem-C343 (3 cr.) or Chem-S343 (if you are a chem or biochem BS)
PSY-P102 (3 cr.) or Soc-S100 or Soc-S101 or Soc-S230 (3 cr.)
Stat-S303 or Stat-S300 or PSY-K300

Junior:
Chem-N330 (5 cr.)
Chem-C483 (3 cr.) or Chem-C383 (non-chem majors) or Chem-C484 + Chem-C485 (total of 6 cr.)
Phys-P201 + Phys-P202 (10 cr. in total algebra-based physics)
Phys-P221 + Phys-P222 (10 cr. in total calculus-based physics required for chem and biochem BS majors)

I didn’t follow the recommended sequence because I came in with a lot of AP credits, so I had to move classes around so I could fit in my 2 degrees and minors. I did/doing:

Freshman Fall 2015:
Chem-C117
Chem-C127
Biol-L112
PSY-P101 (I do not recommend retaking this class if you got a 5 on the AP exam. I retook it and ended up regretting it.)

Freshman Spring 2016:
Chem-C341
Biol-L211
Biol-L113
Psy-P102 (if you took AP psych it’s just the second semester of AP psych. I don’t understand why AP credit doesn’t cover this)

Sophomore Fall 2016:
Chem-C342
Chem-S343
Phys-P221
Soc-S101

Sophomore Spring 2016:
Chem-N330
Chem-C484
Phys-P222

Thanks, that was very helpful.

As of last count DD2 has a good amount of credits (IB diploma + a bunch of AP + bilingual) so she’s close to what you are doing.

So far 1st semester looks like CHEM 117+127, MATH 211, BIO 112 (she could IB out of it but decided against it), some Collins LLC edible plant class (just the thing for worrywart parents) and some 300 level French class (she’s expected to test out of 2 years of language and likely minor in it).

2nd semester Organic Chemistry, scary for 1st year  is that for the faint at heart? Would it help to take CHEM 240 (she’s some Biology variety major so no worries about not counting).

“To develop a standard and comprehensive preparation for the study of organic chemistry. Review of electronic structure, periodicity, bonding, Lewis structures, pKa’s, simple nomenclature and molecular geometry; problem-based approach to developing skills necessary for success in organic chemistry. Course will not count toward chemistry minor or majors.”

@turbo93 omg my schedule sounds exactly like that. i tested into 300 level french, because i just took ap french at school. i kinda dont want to take french ahahha

@turbo93 i got a 28/30 on my CPE, and yes i studied for it lol. Do u think i should take S117 or nah?

I am a firm believer in not testing out of one’s major classes. I assume you mean CHEM 117? IIRC, IU is all-you-can-eat tuition, so you might as well do CHEM 117.

@TheInstitute I was in S117 for a week but then I dropped it. It is definetly more involved but then they don’t cover some things that C117 covered. For example one girl who was in S117 mentioned that they never talked about energy diagrams or Gibbs free energy which was something we discussed in orgo 1. Also, part of the course is physics based chemistry which is why I dropped it. But if you want to for it.

@turbo93 it’s definetly not for the faint of heart it’s a huge weed out class. The problem with taking it in the spring is that there’s 2 teachers who switch off at the 8 wk mark. I don’t know if they are going to do it again in spring 2017 because some peoples grades dropped off because our second 8 week teacher was used to teaching honors orgo and had never taught regular orgo in his life. I liked both teachers but felt like I learned more from the second 8 wk professor because he went into greater detail. In my opinion, orgo isn’t all that difficult if you put time and effort into it. I thought I was going to hate it but now I’m doing orgo research next semester. I don’t think your daughter will need to take 240 as long as she keeps her spring semester balanced by picking classes that won’t be as time intensive as orgo. HPPLC doesn’t recommend taking more than 15 cr any semester you have orgo.
