So I was talking to an advisor and she said that we absolutely NEED C103 and/or the online thing for C117. I was only one point off from the cutoff score however (and that's only because I ran out of time) and I honestly think I can do well in C117. Does the Chemistry department make sure that you take the classes? Or can you just sign up and no one will ever know?

Hopefully someone with more detailed knowledge and experience with C117 and IU Chemistry will chime in…

You’re interested in Medical School right? Lots more chem coming your way.

Have you already taken college chemistry or is this your first Chem/Lab course at IU? If not, I am guessing easier would be better.

Pushing the envelope to get into a class when you scored the bare minimum on the placement is almost never a good idea. On the other hand, the IU math placement scores seem to have a mixed reputation for accurately predicting future success.

I’d be very careful about what you wish for if you have to take more classes in the IU science department and they find out later that you didn’t satisfy a prerequisite.

I know of a person who walked at IU Graduation Spring 2014 and was then informed by IU that they were missing a required course and would not be getting their diploma after all !!! They were pre-med. I was shocked by the story as the person in question was in honors, etc. Stuff happens.

Be Careful.

I honestly don’t remember–I think there was a pre-req check on C117 since it’s for freshmen, but I’m not sure. I personally wouldn’t try it. You won’t be behind, honestly. In addition, it’ll be an easy A if you are ready for C117. It’ll also mean you’re in o-chem closer to MCAT time which means slightly less studying on that account
